CHICAGO – The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) formally commends the Title Wave Book Mobile serving students in Carteret County, North Carolina, approving a resolution made by the North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA), an AASL Chapter. AASL annually recognizes outstanding programs, events, and products nominated by AASL Chapters for their support of the school librarian profession and the learners the profession serves. The full list of 2024 commendations can be found on the AASL website.

"North Carolina School Library Media Association is delighted to have the Title Wave Book Bus recognized nationally by the American Association of School Librarians,” said Laura Aldridge, NCSLMA Delegate to the AASL Chapter Assembly. “Studies show that access to books during the summer prevents a drastic loss in reading skills, especially for kids in need. The Title Wave Book Mobile was designed to provide exposure and generate excitement for books and reading throughout the summer months and extended breaks from school. By traveling to areas of greatest financial need, the Title Wave Book Mobile has provided access to books and information in book deserts in the service area. To date, the Title Wave Book Mobile has provided hundreds of free books to children, parents, and teachers across Carteret County and the Coastal Plain region of North Carolina.”

AASL President Becky Calzada added, “Our AASL Chapters have brought forth eighteen stellar commendations. These recognitions highlight the advocacy of intellectual freedom, access of inclusive literature, celebrates students' use of media and technology that incorporates the integration of AASL Standards and advances the understanding of school librarians as educators. The AASL Board of Directors is grateful for the keen eyes of our state chapter leaders for bringing these resolutions forward. Commendations acknowledge and expand awareness of the important work happening in many local communities in support of school libraries, school librarians and the learners they serve.”

“North Carolina School Library Media Association is pleased to have AASL highlight the positive contributions Amanda McCall and the Title Wave Book Mobile of Carteret County make through embedding literacy, awareness, and engagement into the community,” said Aldridge.

All AASL Chapters are eligible to nominate outstanding programs, events, and products for national recognition. To be commended, nominees must align with the principles expressed in the AASL's mission and value statements. The full list of 2024 commendations can be found on the AASL website.
