The °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±app () is pleased to announce the selection of Cameron Gillespie of Denver, Colorado as the 2023 recipient of the Julia J. Brody Public Librarian Scholarship.

The $4000 scholarship is awarded to individuals planning to specialize in the field of public librarianship.

Cameron currently works as a library assistant at the Ross-University Hills Branch of the Denver Public Library. She remembers with fondness her first experience working in a library as a volunteer at the New York Public Library.

Cameron recognizes the critical role libraries play in their communities. She commented, “Whether it was the original purpose of public libraries or not, they have become places where information and social services intersect.” Cameron further stated, “I have seen firsthand that it is vital for librarians to be prepared for the social services and programming we will need to holistically support our community members.”

Cameron attends the University of Denver. Her goal is to “spend her life eliminating barriers that prevent people from being able to find, understand, and use valuable information.” Cameron says she is “especially passionate about learning strategies for addressing the digital divide related to outreach methods.” Her hope is to work as a public librarian “enriching her community by addressing gaps between the social services available vs. the ones needed, re-envisioning information power structures, developing user-centered community programs, and forming grassroots resource-sharing hubs that amplify underrepresented voices.”

The Julia J. Brody scholarship is made possible through a bequest from the estate of Julia Jussim Brody, who earned degrees at Hunter College and Columbia University’s School of Library Science. After working as a librarian at a military post during WWII, Brody spent the remainder of her professional career in various positions working at the New York Public Library.
