CHICAGO – Author and illustrator Corey R. Tabor is the 2022 recipient of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award for “Fox at Night”, published by Balzer + Bray, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. The award was announced today by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the �������ϲʿ���app (), during LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience, held virtually Jan. 21 - 24.

The Geisel Award is given to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year. Award winners are recognized for their literary and artistic achievements that demonstrate creativity and imagination to engage children in reading. Award and honor book recipients will receive their awards in Washington, D.C., during the Annual Conference in June.

Known from Geisel Award-winning “Fox the Tiger”, we find our friend Fox in the woods at night- a night “full of monsters”. Equipped with a pair of binoculars, Fox encounters other nocturnal creatures who offer to help Fox realize the night is full of friends, not monsters… but are they correct?

Repetitive text is bolstered by whimsical illustrations that provide cues to the story’s humorous plot. Tabor deftly uses sensory stimuli of sight, sound and smell to immerse young readers into the perils of the night.

“With humorous repetition and wit, Tabor reintroduces a beloved character who invites the youngest of readers to encourage Fox -and perhaps themselves- to be brave,” said Geisel Award Committee Chair Eboni Njoku.

Corey lives in Tacoma, Washington with his wife and son and spends his time making pictures and stories.

Three Geisel Honor Books were named:

“Beak & Ally #1: Unlikely Friends,” written and illustrated by Norm Feuti and published by HarperAlley, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.

Beak the Fee-Boo bird is Ally the alligator's best friend- even if Ally doesn't know it yet. Despite Beak's bubbly attempts to befriend Ally, the alligator is content to be alone- until a party invitation and a chance encounter with a Long-Billed Party Pooper remind her of what's important.



Norm Feuti is a children’s author, illustrator and cartoonist living in Massachusetts.

“I Hop,” written and illustrated by Joe Cepeda and published by Holiday House.

A young boy plans a picnic for his grandmother and sets his plan in motion using a rather unique mode of transportation he's acquired- a pogo stick.

Cepeda, award-winning illustrator of more than thirty books for children, currently resides in Claremont, California.

“Nothing Fits a Dinosaur,” written and illustrated by Jonathan Fenske and published by Simon Spotlight, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing Division.



Having been told by his “Mommasaurus” that it's time to settle in for the night, a young boy must find some pajamas after his bath. But when dino drama arises, so does the question: how do you dress a dinosaur?



An author, illustrator, and artist, Jonathan Fenske lives in Greenville, SC with his wife and three daughters.
