Amanda Barnhart, chair of the Freedom to Read Foundation (FTRF) Education Committee, announced four scholarship recipients who will receive funding toward an intellectual freedom course at FTRF partner institution San Jose State University (SJSU) this Fall.

The Fall 2020 Judith F. Krug Education Fund scholarship recipients are:

• Whitney Bevill from Anderson, South Carolina
• Daniel Davis from Camas, Washington
• Samantha (Sam) Kennefick from Lakewood, Colorado
• Allison Michel from Salt Lake City, Utah

“Members of the Freedom to Read Foundation’s Education Committee congratulate this round of LIS scholarship recipients who explore intellectual freedom issues beyond the censorship of library collections, said Barnhart “They are eager to understand and identify how intellectual freedom issues are at stake in areas concerning privacy, legislation, and ‘censorship through noise.’ They represent the future of public, academic and special libraries and are interested in carrying on the spirit of Judith Krug by one day coaching others on where libraries stand on intellectual freedom topics.”

The students will take a three-credit course offered by professor Carrie Gardner through the SJSU iSchool. Gardner has taught an intellectual freedom course since 2002 and her courses explore topics ranging from the legal foundation of the First Amendment to intellectual freedom history, policies, ethics and privacy, and the ways these topics intersect in our libraries. Any LIS graduate-level student in the country can receive a free, one-year membership to the Freedom to Read Foundation through the Robert P. Holley Fund. Members may attend FTRF webinars for free. More information and applications can be found on the Robert P. Holley Fund .
