Roy B. Martin, IV Roy B. Martin, IV was appointed to the Norfolk (Va.) Public Library Board of Trustees in September 2011 and became chairman in March 2013. During his tenure, the Norfolk Public Library system has made measurable progress in meeting its strategic directions, which exemplify excellent public service, equality and ease of access to information regardless of personal circumstances, community outreach, materials in multiple formats, and the active promotion of literacy through collections, programs and services. He has created a yearly retreat for trustees, updated trustee responsibilities and by-laws, attended city meetings and library events and worked with the city clerk’s office on new members and re-appointments.

Martin was introduced to the public library and received his first library card at a very young age. As a child born with a profound hearing impairment, access to the various books provided the freedom to explore new worlds that would help him connect to the world around him. He is motivated by the opportunity to advocate for the library and provide innovative public spaces and resource centers for the community

He is a past chairman and currently serves on the board of directors for the Coalition for Hearing Education and Research (CHEAR, Inc.). In 2011 he was recognized by Inside Business as an honoree of the Top 40 Under 40 of Hampton Roads. Martin is a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College. He works for Wells Fargo Advisors and holds the certified financial planner designation.
