What types of libraries are eligible?

This exhibition tour is open to public libraries in the United States. Other non-public library organizations, including academic, community college, school, and special libraries are not eligible to apply. Individuals and federal entities are not eligible to apply. Late, incomplete, and ineligible applications will not be reviewed.

If you are a representative of a non-public library who is interested in bringing the World on the Move exhibition to your community, we encourage you to reach out to partner with your local public library. The public library must be the applicant and host, but partnering with other local libraries and community organizations for greater community impact can strengthen your application.

How many libraries will be selected to host the exhibition?

Fifteen public libraries will be selected for an exhibition tour starting March 2023 and continuing through August 2025.

How do I apply?

To begin the application process, go to You can download a PDF of the application to review the questions ahead of time in order to prepare your answers. The final application must be filled out and submitted via the grants management platform.

When is the application deadline?

Applications will be accepted for World on the Move between October 10, 2022 – November 14, 2022. Applications must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time on November 14, 2022. Late or incomplete applications, and applications from ineligible institutions, will not be reviewed. Applications and support materials may not be submitted by mail or e-mail.

Will only successful applicants receive notification about the outcome of the application?

No. All applicants will be notified by , regardless of the outcome of their applications. Libraries will be notified via e-mail by January 13, 2022. If your library has not received notification by the stated date, please contact at 312-280-5045 or publicprograms@ala.org.

Is attendance at the orientation session required?

Yes. The library project director named in your application must attend an all-day virtual orientation over Zoom in February 2023, exact date TBD.

I want to apply but my library can only host the exhibition during a limited part of the exhibition tour. Can I request certain dates during the tour in my application?

Yes, there will be a section of the application to rank your library’s preferred dates, and then a following section where you can indicate dates that would not be possible for you.

Does this exhibition have any components that require an electrical or internet connection?

No, World on the Move does not contain any components that need to be plugged in to an electrical outlet or connected to the internet.

Will exhibition content be available in languages other than English?

The physical display panels and interactive components are all in English. Each exhibition display component has a QR code that takes the visitor to a multi-lingual virtual version of the exhibition. It also enables visitors to activate a text-to-speech application if needed.

Do hosting libraries need to hire extra security for the exhibition?

No, hosting sites do not need to hire any additional security for the exhibition. However, we do require that library staff monitor the exhibition every 30 minutes during peak periods of use, and every hour during less busy times.

Can the exhibition be displayed at multiple branches of the same library system?

No, the exhibition may only be displayed at one branch of a library system and may not be moved from the selected site to another location during the run of their display period. However, events and activities may be programmed at multiple branches to expand community participation in this important conversation.

Multiple branches from the same library system who apply will be in competition with each other, so we recommend that larger library systems coordinate to decide which branch would serve as the best location for the target audience or the community at large to access the exhibition. It is up to the library system to determine which branch is the best host for the exhibit, and does not have to be the main branch.

My library is considering applying for this grant but we do not have the space. Can we host the exhibit at a partner institution?

Because a major goal of this exhibition tour is to engage audiences within public library spaces, host sites for World on the Move will not be allowed to display the exhibit in a non-public library space.

If our library is selected to host the exhibition, will send an installation team to help with setting up the exhibition?

No, host libraries will install the exhibition themselves. It has been designed for easy installation with no special tools beyond a step-ladder. The exhibition consists of six modular display panels and a table on short legs that features an interactive spinner with discussion prompts. It is accompanied by a detailed installation manual and an instructional video that can be accessed online. It will arrive in seven packing crates with wheels that can be easily maneuvered by two people.
