CRKN-Érudit Partnership

The Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) is a partnership of Canadian universities dedicated to expanding digital content for academic institutions in Canada. Érudit is the largest digital production and publication platform for Canadian francophone and bilingual scholarly journals in North America. Their partnership is based on funding journals by transforming the funds that were previously provided as a subscription fee to be used to support the journals at the outset in making their content freely available to all.

The collaboration between libraries and journal publishers has created a framework for a new relationship between publishers and libraries, and is helping to provide financial support to Canadian journals during the transition to a fully open access model. This results in increased world-wide access to Canadian scholarly content, while controlling fees for formerly subscribing libraries. CRKN and Érudit provide a viable model that other organizations may look to as they move toward open access.
