Eligibility

The applicants will be a school librarian who has worked with a teacher(s) to execute a project, event, or program to further social justice using resources of the school library.
The following criteria will be used in the selection process:
The school librarian must be a personal member of AASL.
The librarian has made a significant effort to teach the concept of social justice in creative, inspiring ways. This might include, but not be limited to, teaching about civil liberties, human rights, international justice, genocide studies, and local issues of justice. For example, applicants may design a special lesson, course of study, create a school or district project, or lead their students in some way to address social justice.
Close attention will be focused on applicants who follow the “spirit” of social justice in their classroom; namely, those who possess the ability to expose injustice while at the same time inspiring their students to repair the world through justice, service, or advocacy.

The project will be judged on:
The degree of joint effort, over a significant period of time, between the school librarian and classroom teacher(s);
The use of appropriate school library resources to convey a child’s sense of justice as exemplified by many of the characters in the works of Roald Dahl.

Roald Dahl’s Miss Honey Social Justice Award recognizes and encourages collaboration and partnerships between school librarians and teachers in teaching social justice through joint planning of a program, unit or event in support of social justice using school library resources. The award is to acknowledge teaching by school librarians and the use of school library resources to convey a child’s sense of justice as exemplified by many of the characters in the works of Roald Dahl. The Roald Dahl’s Miss Honey Social Justice Award recognizes AASL members who have collaboratively designed a lesson, event, or course of study on social justice.

It is of the opinion of Lemony Snicket, author, reader, and alleged malcontent, that librarians have suffered enough. Therefore he is establishing an annual prize honoring a librarian who has faced adversity with integrity and dignity intact. The prize will be a generous amount of cash from Mr. Snicket's disreputable gains, along with an odd, symbolic object from his private stash, and a certificate, which may or may not be suitable for framing. It is Mr. Snicket's hope, and the 's, that the Snicket Prize will remind readers everywhere of the joyous importance of librarians and the trouble that is all too frequently unleashed upon them.

From 1984-2009, the State and Regional Intellectual Freedom Achievement Award was given to the most innovative and effective intellectual freedom project covering a state or region. Projects could be one-time, one-year or ongoing/multi-year efforts. The award consisted of a citation and $1,000. The award was underwritten first by SIRS, then by ProQuest/SIRS.

Gerald Hodges joined the staff in 1989 as Director of Membership Services and the Chapter Relations Office. At his death in 2006, he was the Associate Director of Communications and Marketing, but his passion was still Intellectual Freedom and Chapter Relations. Hodges willed a portion of his estate to establish the Gerald Hodges Fund in support of intellectual freedom. Memorial contributions to that fund also came from many friends and colleagues. In 2013, it was decided that the most appropriate use of that fund would be to re-institute the former "State and Regional Intellectual Freedom Achievement Award" as the "Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award."

Criteria

An chapter or other qualified organization has been unusually successful in coalition-building so that allied groups are marshaled effectively to support intellectual freedom at the national, state or regional level.
An chapter or other qualified organization has done an exemplary PR task in promoting awareness of intellectual freedom issues at the national, state or region level.
A project has been effective in recruiting activists within and outside of librarianship to work on intellectual freedom projects.
A structure has been conceived that markedly enhances the continuity and effectiveness of the organization's efforts in intellectual freedom.
A chapter, etc. has succeeded in galvanizing to an unusual extent support for intellectual freedom within a state chapter.
An chapter, etc. has intervened with special effectiveness in an intellectual freedom crisis at the national, state or regional level. Such intervention should, preferably, have resulted in a clear victory over the forces of censorship.
Projects that can be generalized to other chapters, etc. will merit special attention of the Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award.

The winner does not need to be a member of , RUSA, or BRASS but preference will be given to those that are, indeed members. Applicants should be an academic librarian with five or fewer years of experience in business librarianship or be a new (less than five years) member to BRASS.

Courage is defined by the donor, Paul Howard, as:

The Patterson Copyright Award recognizes contributions of an individual or group that pursues and supports the Constitutional purpose of the U.S. Copyright Law, fair use, and the public domain. The award is named after L. Ray Patterson, a key legal figure who explained and justified the importance of the public domain and fair use. He helped articulate that copyright law was negatively shifting from its original purpose and overly favoring rights of copyright holders.
