About

In honor of Lois Ann Gregory-Wood’s approaching 50-year anniversary of service with , President Jim Neal and Honorary Member, Past President, and GLBTRT Councilor Ann K. Symons have proposed a new award to be given by the ��ϲʿ��app and administered by the Office for Human Resource Development and Recruitment (HRDR). The proposal was endorsed by the Executive Board at their 2017 Fall meeting and has the consent of Lois Ann GregoryWood. This proposal was presented to SSGC and reviewed by committee members. SSGC has voted to support this proposal and therefore we ask the Council to approve this proposal. (see 2018 Council Document #31)

As Lois Ann Gregory-Wood approaches 50 years of service with , it is appropriate for to honor her long years of service and her unstinting commitment to the organization we all care for. Lois Ann started at in 1968 working in a variety of units before moving to PLA. For the last 27+ years she has been the Council Secretariat responsible for the work of Council. For hundreds of Council members, past and present, she is the face of Council and governance. We are proposing “The Lois Ann Gregory-Wood Fellows” award as a conference scholarship program for mid-career members who are interested in governance to attend a full cycle of : a Midwinter and Annual Conference. This program will include a mentor component under the title: Lois Ann Gregory-Wood Supporter. This proposal was endorsed, in concept, by the Executive Board at their Fall 2017 meeting. We also have the consent of Lois Ann Gregory-Wood to proceed with this honor. Further, this proposal fits with the strategic initiative of the Neal presidency to use conference as a learning environment and use the wealth of experience of our members to help engage members into governance. The purpose of the award is to give members who have been working in libraries or who have been library trustees/friends an understanding of governance and to help them engage in the governance of the Association at any level and to ultimately to provide a larger pool of members who are interested in governance. This program gives a jump start by making possible attendance at major professional governance activities within .

The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) is allocating $30,000 in the 2020 fiscal year to offer grants of up to $5,000 each for new research in areas suggested by ACRL’s 2019 report Open and Equitable Scholarly Communications: Creating a More Inclusive Future (available for download or purchase). This program is one of several developed by ACRL’s Research and Scholarly Environment Committee (ReSEC) to support ACRL’s strategic goal that the academic and research library workforce accelerates the transition to more open and equitable systems of scholarship.

ACRL invites applications from librarians and information professionals seeking to conduct research that will contribute to more inclusive systems of scholarly communications. Proposed research projects should build on the foundations of the ACRL research agenda Open and Equitable Scholarly Communications: Creating a More Inclusive Future and fill gaps in existing literature. The committee invites proposals using any investigative methods appropriate to the research questions. These include but are not limited to standard quantitative and qualitative approaches, as well as critical evaluations, case studies, reflective essays, and (auto)ethnography. OpenCon is a community of early career professionals and students from across the world working to create an open system for research and education. The annual conference provides an opportunity for the next generation of open practitioners and researchers to gather together and learn about key issues impacting scholarly and scientific research, educational materials, and digital research data. Conference attendees will develop the critical skills necessary to catalyze action toward a more open system for sharing the world’s information. ACRL provides scholarship funding for two librarians to attend OpenCon each year.

The Association of College and Research Libraries offers travel scholarships of up to $2,000 each for librarians presenting on their work demonstrating the impact of academic libraries in the broader landscape of higher education. This program is one of several developed by ACRL’s Value of Academic Libraries Committee to support librarians in their efforts to communicate to our partners in higher education including administrators, scholars, and teachers working in all disciplines. These travel scholarships support the community in taking up a recommendation from the 2017 ACRL report Academic Library Impact: Improving Practice and Essential Areas to Research (prepared by OCLC Research and available for download or purchase) that academic librarians effectively communicate their contributions both up to institutional stakeholders and out to other departments.

ACRL invites applications from those seeking to present work on the impact of academic libraries at higher education conferences or disciplinary conferences where they will reach a wide audience (scholarships will not be awarded for travel to library conferences). The presentations may be based on practice-based work or formal research projects. To have the greatest possible effect, the committee seeks strong applicants who bring a range of perspectives in terms of types of institutions, geographical regions, and nature of the work presented.

Eligibility

The award will be granted to an MLS degreed librarian from an accredited school to facilitate and further research relating to history and history librarianship. An emphasis in an area reflected by the History Section’s subject-oriented committees, not excluding American history, is required. Those committees are: Genealogy, Local History, Instruction and Research Services, and Historical Materials.

Criteria

A wrap-up report submission to the History Section Executive Board is required upon completion of the project. Publication of the results is encouraged.

The award winner will receive a citation and up to $2500 (less 20% overhead) which may be used at the winner’s discretion. Examples: to offset travel expenses to consult distant materials, to pay photocopying charges, to obtain copyright permissions, to offset publication subvention costs, to buy equipment needed for the project, to purchase research-related office supplies, or like expenditures. The individual applicant and his/her institution shall determine whether the award money will be paid directly to the librarian as an individual or to his or her institution, based on the institution’s grant recipient requirements and whether the project is for personal research unrelated to the librarian’s job or for a work-related project.
