Eligibility

The Stonewall Book Awards of the ��ϲʿ��app are given annually to English-language books of exceptional merit relating to the LGBTQIA+ experience. The awards are given to works published in the United States in the previous calendar year, although works published elsewhere may be considered. Re-printings of previously published books will not be considered. Substantially changed new editions of previously published works and English translations of foreign-language books are eligible for the awards.

Criteria

Awards are made in three categories: adult literature, adult nonfiction and children's and young adult literature. The adult literature category encompasses novels, short stories, poetry, and drama. The adult nonfiction category includes biography, history, criticism, reference works, fine arts, and other traditional nonfiction genres. Anthologies comprised of both nonfiction and literary pieces will be categorized by whichever form predominates. The children’s and young adult literature includes both fiction and non-fiction.

Anyone may suggest a title to the Stonewall Book Awards - Children’s and Young Adult Committee members for consideration. However, the publisher of a proposed title, agents or representatives of the author, or anyone else who may stand to gain directly from the nomination of the book should disclose this information via the online form. All suggestions must be submitted by the deadline of December 1.

The awards, which consist of a commemorative plaque and a cash stipend, are presented to the winning authors or editors at the Annual Conference, held in June or July. The amount of the cash stipend to be awarded is determined annually by the Rainbow Round Table of the ��ϲʿ��app.

Obligation

Awardees are expected to receive their award and give an acceptance speech during the Stonewall Book Awards Brunch during the Annual Conference.

Notification

The Chair will notify the winning authors and publishers as soon as the winners have been decided. The Chair will also notify the publishers of the Stonewall Honor Books.
In addition to the Chair of the Rainbow Round Table, the Chair will notify the ��ϲʿ��app of the winners at the 's LibLearnX Conference, specifically the Public Awareness Office and the Office for Diversity, Literacy, and Outreach Services.
In collaboration with the ODLOS office, the Book Awards Chair shall prepare a press release announcing the winners and finalists. Copies of this announcement shall be sent to the editor of the GLBT News, the Rainbow Board list, the GLBTRT-list, the Public Awareness Office, library and book selling periodicals, and other LGBTQIA+ publishers, booksellers, periodicals, and newspapers.

Eligibility

The awards are given to works published in the United States in the previous calendar year, although works published elsewhere may be considered. Reprintings of previously published books will not be considered. However, substantially changed new editions of previously published works and English translations of foreign-language books are eligible for the awards. The Chair of the Stonewall Book Awards Committee shall make the final determination as to category, taking into account the Library of Congress classification number (if applicable).

Anyone may suggest a title for consideration by the Stonewall Book Awards Committee except those who would gain from a book's nomination: the publisher, author, or their representatives. All suggestions must include a short statement describing why the title should be considered.

The Chair or Staff Liasion will notify the winning authors and publishers as soon as the winners have been decided. In addition to the Co-Chairs of the Rainbow Round Table, the Chair will notify the ��ϲʿ��app of the winners at the Midwinter Meeting, specifically the Communication and Marketing Office and the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services. In collaboration with the Staff Liasion, the Book Awards Chair shall prepare a press release announcing the winners and finalists. Copies of this announcement shall be sent to the editor of the Rainbow Round Table Newsletter, the Communications and Marketing Office, library and bookselling periodicals, and other LGBTQIA+ publishers, booksellers, periodicals, and newspapers. The press release shall also be distributed widely through discussion groups on the Internet. The Chair must request social security numbers from the winning authors. This information is forwarded to the liaison at the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services, who arranges for the award checks. Due to the limited funding for the Book Awards, letters to the winning title's publisher should encourage the publisher to fund the winner's attendance at the Annual Conference.

In 1921 Frederic G.Melcher had the Newbery Medal designed by René Paul Chambellan. The bronze medal has the winner's name and the date engraved on the back. The ��ϲʿ��app Executive Board in 1922 delegated to the Children's Librarians' Section the responsibility for selecting the book to receive the Newbery Medal.

The inscription on the Newbery Medal still reads "Children's Librarians' Section," although the section has changed its name four times and its membership now includes both school and public library children's librarians in contrast to the years 1922-58, when the section, under three different names, included only public library children's librarians. Today the Medal is administered by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of .

How the Newbery Medal Came to Be

The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the ��ϲʿ��app for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year. On June 22, 1921, Frederic G. Melcher proposed the award to the ��ϲʿ��app meeting of the Children's Librarians' Section and suggested that it be named for the eighteenth-century English bookseller John Newbery. The idea was enthusiastically accepted by the children's librarians, and Melcher's official proposal was approved by the Executive Board in 1922. In Melcher's formal agreement with the board, the purpose of the Newbery Medal was stated as follows: "To encourage original creative work in the field of books for children. To emphasize to the public that contributions to the literature for children deserve similar recognition to poetry, plays, or novels. To give those librarians, who make it their life work to serve children's reading interests, an opportunity to encourage good writing in this field."

The Newbery Award thus became the first children's book award in the world. Its terms, as well as its long history, continue to make it the best known and most discussed children's book award in this country.

From the beginning of the awarding of the Newbery and Caldecott Medals, committees could, and usually did, cite other books as worthy of attention. Such books were referred to as Newbery or Caldecott "runners-up." In 1971 the term "runners-up" was changed to "honor books." The new terminology was made retroactive so that all former runners-up are now referred to as Newbery or Caldecott Honor Books.

The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. It is co-sponsored by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the ��ϲʿ��app (), and the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking (REFORMA), an affiliate.

The award is named after Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library. As a children's librarian, storyteller, and author, she enriched the lives of Puerto Rican children in the U.S.A. through her pioneering work of preserving and disseminating Puerto Rican folklore.

It is now an annual award. It was a biennial award from its inaugural year in 1996 through 2008.

The Award is restricted to author(s) and illustrator(s) who are citizens or residents of the United States.The committee in its deliberations is to consider only the books eligible for the award, as specified in the terms.The "author(s) and illustrator(s)" may include co-authors and co-illustrators. The author(s) and illustrator(s) may be awarded the medal posthumously."Distinguished" is defined as: Marked by distinction: noted for significant achievement; Marked by excellence in quality; Marked by conspicuous excellence or eminence; Individually distinct; Providing a stimulating and successful reading experience for the beginning reader containing the kind of plot, sensibility, and rhythm that can carry a child along from start to finish."American children’s literature" means that books originally published in other countries are not eligible."Contribution to the body of children’s literature that encourages and supports the beginning reader" indicates the text of a book, which must be directed at readers from pre-K through Grade 2. The book must also contain illustrations, which function as keys or clues to the text. The committee shall consider all forms of writing—fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.
Reprints and compilations are not eligible.

Criteria

The ALSC office is only requesting for one copy to be sent to the ALSC office and one copy to the committee chair. Standards are in place for the committee members to review and share submissions. If you are submitting for multiple awards, only one copy needs to be sent to the ALSC office.
Neither the ALSC office nor the committee chair can confirm receipt of submissions. If you would like to confirm receipt of your submission please use a mailing service with delivery confirmation. Submissions that are dropped off in- person to the ALSC office will not be accepted.
The ALSC office cannot answer eligibility questions or advise on which award your submission is eligible for. It is up to you to review the terms and criteria and if you feel you qualify, submit as appropriate. Eligibility is determined by the committee and is confidential.
The book and media awards are announced each year at ’s Midwinter Meeting in January. The materials received by the ALSC office throughout the year will be used for ALSC’s Bookapalooza Program. The Bookapalooza Program selects three libraries to receive a Bookapalooza collection of these materials to be used in a way that creatively enhances their library service to children and families.
Deadline for submitting books is December 31 of the publication year.

Criteria

The Award is given to an African American author and illustrator for outstanding inspirational and educational contributions. The Coretta Scott King Book Award titles promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream of a pluralistic society.

The Award is further designed to commemorate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood.

The Criteria of the award is as follows:

Must portray some aspect of the black experience, past, present, or future.
Must be written/illustrated by an African American
Must be published in the U.S. in the year preceding presentation of the Award. (For example: only books published in 2023 will qualify for the 2024 award.)
Must be an original work
Must meet established standards of quality writing for youth which include:
- Clear plot
- Well drawn characters, which portray growth and development during the course of the story.
- Writing style which is consistent with and suitable to the age intended
- Accuracy
Must be written for a youth audience in one of three categories:
- Preschool-grade 4
- Grades 5-8
- Grades 9-12
Particular attention will be paid to titles which seek to motivate readers to develop their own attitudes and behaviors as well as comprehend their personal duty and responsibility as citizens in a pluralistic society.
Illustrations should reflect established qualitative standards identified in the statement below:

Illustrations should... “heighten and extend the readers' awareness of the world around him. They should lead him to an appreciation of beauty. The style and content of the illustrations should be...neither coy nor condescending...Storytelling qualities should enlarge upon the story elements that were hinted in the text and should include details that will awaken and strengthen the imagination of the reader and permit him to interpret the words and pictures in a manner unique to him”

The Coretta Scott King Book Awards Seal was designed by artist Lev Mills in 1974. The symbolism in the seal reflects both Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s philosophy and the ideals of the award.

The basic circle represents continuity in movement, resolving from one idea to another. Within the circle is the image of an African American child reading a book. The five main religious symbols below the image of the child represent nonsectarianism. The superimposed pyramid symbolizes both strength and Atlanta University, the award’s headquarters when the seal was designed. At the apex of the pyramid is the dove, symbolic of peace. The rays shine toward peace and brotherhood.

The bronze seal denotes a Coretta Scott King Book Award author or illustrator winner; the silver denotes an author or illustrator honoree; and the green seal denotes a John Steptoe Award for New Talent recipient.

According to Lev Mills, the five nonsectarian* symbols on the seal represent:

Star and Crescent - a symbol of Islam. Many nations with a Muslim majority display this symbol on its flags. This not a religious symbol but rather it is a national, cultural, political, military, or community symbol.

Om - a symbol of Hinduism. The written form of the word is in Sanskrit, a language of India. The sound OM is used repeatedly during meditation.

Latin Cross - a symbol of Christianity; the cross upon which Jesus died; Christian emblem or badge.

Star of David - a hexagram used as a symbol of Judaism.

Tao - a symbol of China. Pronounced “Dow,” it has the design of “Yang and Yin” (Dualism); its purpose is to nourish balance in the universe.

John Steptoe Award for New Talent

Purpose

These books affirm new talent and offer visibility to excellence in writing or illustration at the beginning of a career as a published book creator.

Selection Criteria

The criteria for eligibility will be the same as those for the writing and illustration awards, with the exception that the winner(s)' published works cannot exceed three in number.

An author or illustrator who has already received or has just been selected to win one of the Coretta Scott King Book Awards in the current year is not eligible for the John Steptoe Award for New Talent. An author may receive this award one time.

One award will be presented annually for text or illustrations. The committee may choose to select one book for writing and a second book for illustration. The award need not be given if the committee so decides in a particular year.
