CHICAGO – During Library Card Sign-up Month, the ��ϲʿ��app () and librarians across the country will remind students, parents, and caregivers that a library card is the most important school supply of all.

Each September, and libraries around the nation celebrate Library Card Sign-up Month. A library card provides access to technology, multimedia content. and educational programming that transforms lives and strengthens communities. Libraries provide people of all ages the opportunity to pursue their dreams and passions.

All libraries can participate and amplify this message using free tools from . They include:

Promotional artwork featuring this year’s Library Card Sign-up Honorary Chair, Marley Dias, the 16-year-old author, executive producer of Netflix’s Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices, and founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks.
Audio public service announcements (PSAs) featuring Phil Morehart, host of American Libraries Magazine’s Call Number podcast. These include ready-to-air PSAs for radio stations tagged with the ID lasting 10, 15, 20, and 30 seconds in both the WAV and MP3 formats. They also include customizable PSAs of similar length to which members can add their own ID.
Social media graphics in both English and Spanish. Libraries and library lovers are encouraged to share their stories on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram using the hashtag #LibraryCardSignUpMonth. ’s digital graphics are free for all to use on their websites and social media accounts.
Other tools, such as a sample press release, PSA scripts, mini-posters, and yard and window signs are available on the Library Card Sign-up Month web page.

In addition, all libraries are encouraged to ask their patrons how their library empowers them or their community. Just use the hashtag #LibrariesEmpower on Twitter or Instagram from Sept. 1 to Sept. 22. Entries can also be submitted by posting as a comment or wall post on the I Love Libraries Facebook page. The creator of one randomly selected post will receive a $100 Visa gift card and an Graphics The Child Poster. Additionally, three second-place winners will receive an Graphics The Child Poster.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. CHICAGO – El próximo 30 de abril, cientos de bibliotecas de todo el país celebrarán el 25to aniversario del “Día”. Día 25th anniversary celebrations to highlight diversity, culture, and literacy

CHICAGO – On April 30, hundreds of libraries nationwide will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Día. This nationally recognized initiative emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds by linking children and families to multicultural books, stories, and other library resources.

Children's librarians are transforming lives by offering resources that challenge bigotry and cultural invisibility. As our nation becomes more polarized and misconceptions regarding various cultures are in the limelight, librarians and library workers are on the front lines of fueling understanding through education and diverse literature.

Children must have access to books and resources that reflect their culture and language. Experts say a lack of diversity in children’s books can be harmful to the social and identity development of children, particularly those representing cultures with untold stories.

Library staff recognize and respect culture, heritage, and language as powerful tools for building unity and strengthening families and communities. As information experts, librarians nurture cognitive and literacy development in ways that honor and embrace a child's home language and culture.

Since its inception in 1996, Día, also known as El día de Los niños/El día de Los Libros (Children's Day/Book Day), celebrates children, families, and reading all year long, culminating annually on April 30. Día celebrations consist of multicultural events, including family programs, bilingual story hours, book giveaways, and a host of other fun activities.

Día is an enhancement of Children's Day, which started in 1925 and was designated as a day to bring attention to children's importance and well-being. In 1996, nationally acclaimed children's book author Pat Mora proposed linking the celebration of childhood and children with literacy to found Día.

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the ��ϲʿ��app, is the national home for Día. The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking (REFORMA) is a founding partner of the initiative.

PLA’s 2021 early literacy calendars now available

CHICAGO – For the third year in a row, the Public Library Association (PLA) has developed and released an Early Literacy Calendar, featuring daily literacy-building activities that libraries can share with families in their community.

These bright and colorful calendars are downloadable and reproducible. Based on the Every Child Ready to Read practices of reading, writing, singing, talking, playing, and counting, each download contains twelve months of learning activities, book lists, nursery rhymes, and more.

The calendar pages include daily skills-building activities, and the reverse contains supplementary content like nursery rhymes, early literacy tips, song lyrics, and suggested reading material. The calendar pages are also customizable with each containing a designated spot to add your library’s logo and contact information. Libraries nationwide have used these calendars to help parents and caregivers engage with their children in early literacy activities every day of the year.

Herrick District Library (Holland, Mich.) has incorporated the 2020 Early Literacy Calendar into its online resources by creating a gallery of early literacy activities and caregiver tips, which includes on-demand videos of children's librarian sing-a-longs, book recommendations, and PDFs of the calendar. CHICAGO - El 23 de julio, el Institute of Museum and Library Services (Instituto de Servicios de Museos y Bibliotecas)(IMLS) anunció que la Public Library Association (Asociación de Bibliotecas Públicas )(PLA) y el National Center for Families Learning (Centro Nacional para el Aprendizaje Familiar )(NCFL) recibió una subvención de planificación en la categoría Subvenciones de liderazgo nacional para bibliotecas. Public Library Association, National Center for Families Learning grant aims to support increased Latinx parent participation in U.S. libraries

CHICAGO – On July 23, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) announced that the Public Library Association (PLA) and the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) received a planning grant under the National Leadership Grants for Libraries category. The grant, made to the ��ϲʿ��app, is part of an IMLS $18.2 million investment in U.S. library initiatives, meant to support projects that address significant challenges and opportunities facing the library field and have the potential to advance theory and practice with new tools, research findings, models, services, practices, or alliances that will be widely used.

As one of the 38 projects selected, PLA and NCFL will receive $99,949 to develop and document methods for how library staff can support authentic Latinx parent participation. Working in three (urban, suburban, and rural) locations, PLA and NCFL will co-design a process to involve Latinx parents in creating services designed for them. The project will undertake an environmental scan and engage in community-based learning with library staff and parents. The intent is to generate strategies and practices for authentic parent participation and identify approaches and best practices that can be piloted on a national scale.

Family engagement is a shared responsibility among families, educators, and communities to support children’s learning and development. The potential for public libraries to support family engagement and family literacy is substantial, given their unique position in the community as free, accessible learning environments which serve all ages and their ability to address a wide range of caregiver needs, such as employment or access to social services. PLA has offered tools and training on family engagement to libraries since 2015, including publications such as Public Libraries: A Vital Space for Family Engagement and Ideabook: Libraries for Families. These tools offer a family engagement framework to help libraries move beyond family engagement as random, individual programs led by youth services staff toward systematically and strategically applying family engagement concepts to their work.

“Public libraries are doing incredible work to motivate and support parents to engage in their children’s education,” says Jo Giudice, Dallas Public Library Director and co-chair of the PLA Family Engagement Task Force. “With hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s even more critical to find new ways to engage all families, in person and virtually, and counter the COVID-19 learning slide. Libraries can help families facing new stresses, like loss of employment, overcome those challenges while also inspiring them to help their children learn.”

NCFL will bring three decades of pioneering family engagement programs and resources for low-income communities, training expertise, and facilitation of co-design work to inform the project. With NCFL’s deep expertise in family engagement and family literacy across multiple disciplines and PLA’s understanding of library programs and its national network, the two partners will work together to develop strategies to advance, spread, and sustain engagement of Latinx families in libraries.

“Latinx families can position themselves to thrive both now and in generations to come through increased engagement with libraries. Cultural barriers and misconceptions about libraries have historically served as barriers to access for Latinx families, and we must change this narrative. NCFL is excited to bring more than 30 years of experience engaging families through literacy to this project as we seek solutions together,” says Dr. Joshua Cramer, NCFL Executive Vice President.

The project, which will begin Sept. 1, 2020, will employ a co-design process, involving recipients of services in the creation of those services, to identify culturally responsive practices and resources that fully and authentically engage historically marginalized Latinx communities in library programs. This strategy aligns with components of the PLA family engagement framework urging libraries to “raise up” family voices, elevating family perspectives to develop and improve programs and services. The project will work with the Dallas Public Library, Arapahoe Libraries (Sheridan, Colo.), and Forest Grove City Library (Ore.) and Latinx families in their communities.

Now available: Library Card Sign-up Month artwork starring Toy Story 4 characters

CHICAGO – As Honorary Chairs of Library Card Sign-up Month, “Toy Story 4” characters Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Bo Peep and friends are appearing in print and digital graphics to promote the value of a library card. The “Toy Story 4” crew is also being featured in customizable library card artwork.

All the free graphics and artwork can be downloaded through the Library Card Sign-up Month Toolkit (an account is required but registration is free, and anyone can join). Sample tools including a proclamation, a template press release, radio PSA scripts and social media posts are also available for libraries to use. The tools remind the public of all the resources available with a library card.

To receive up-to-date news and happenings about Library Card Sign-up Month, join the Library Card Sign-up Community in Connect. It’s a place to help brainstorm ideas and share best practices. An account will need to be created, but membership is not required to join.

CHICAGO -- The Public Library Association (PLA) has developed a new product designed to boost early childhood literacy programming in libraries, schools and daycare centers. PLA's 2019 Early Childhood Literacy Activity Calendar is now available for sale. Based on the core practices of Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library, PLA's parent-education initiative, the publication emphasizes activities involving reading, writing, singing, talking, playing and counting.

The calendar includes twelve months of learning activities, book lists and nursery rhymes. Raise money for library professionals by streaming Hulu’s seasonal scenics

CHICAGO – What do misbehaving puppies, tree sap and a melting snowman have in common? This month, they’re helping support the ��ϲʿ��app () via Hulu’s Stream for a Cause campaign. Through Dec. 31, each time you stream one of Hulu’s 10 holiday scenics such as “Puppies Crash Christmas,” “A Sap Story” and “The Snowman,” Hulu will contribute to , up to a total donation of $100,000. This year, Hulu created two new holiday scenics, including Library Cheer, to celebrate the partnership.

“A heartfelt thank you to Hulu for supporting the ��ϲʿ��app’s efforts to provide our nation’s library professionals with tools and informational resources that fuel efforts to strengthen communities,” said President Loida Garcia-Febo. “I wish Hulu and our nation’s library workers happy holidays and look forward to a new year filled with endless opportunities to transform lives through education and lifelong learning.”

Newest PLA 'Quick Reads' book offers guidance for library service to teenage parents

CHICAGO -- The Public Library Association (PLA) has added a new publication to its collection of resources that are available free of charge to all PLA personal members in good standing. Teaching Early Literacy to Teen Parents is the seventh installment in the Association’s “Quick Reads for Busy Librarians” series. The Quick Reads series features publications under 100 pages in length and covering topics deemed essential to modern public library workers.

The newest Quick Reads publication was written by Clair Larkin, a library services specialist at the San Antonio (Texas) Public Library. Drawing upon the principles of PLA's Every Child Ready to Read® @ your library® program, Teaching Early Literacy to Teen Parents contains practical, tried, and tested advice for any public library to get started or to improve teen parent programming. It is currently available for download (PDF, 71 pages) from the PLA Member Library. To access this free publication, you must first log into .org to confirm your current PLA personal membership. You are welcome to make one printed copy, though we ask that you do not post the file online or share it electronically in any way.

Other Quick Reads publications available free of charge to PLA members include PLA 2018: Ten Essential Programs (PDF, 63 pages), Taking Care of Business in the 21st Century (PDF, 58 pages), Get Inside: Responsible Jail and Prison Library Service (PDF, 72 pages), and Building and Operating a Digital Media Lab (PDF, 64 pages).
