AASL appoints 2025 National Conference Committee

CHICAGO – Fifteen American Association of School Librarian (AASL) member leaders have been appointed to plan the next AASL National Conference taking place October 16-18, 2025, in St. Louis, Missouri. National conference committee members will be responsible for identifying current educational needs, selecting dynamic professional development, and providing attendees opportunities to connect.

AASL Opens Call For 2025 AASL National Conference Committee Members

CHICAGO – The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) seeks enthusiastic and profession-focused school librarians to serve on the 2025 AASL National Conference Committee. The conference, taking place October 16-18, 2025, in St. Louis, Missouri, is the only national conference dedicated solely to the needs of school librarians and their roles as educational leaders. AASL members may apply at www.ala.org/aasl/app.

“The AASL National Conference brings together a variety of professionals centered on growing their practice in school librarianship” said AASL President-Elect Becky Calzada. “For anyone in attendance, the 2023 national conference was an affirmation of the importance in standing together, not only to expand our knowledge but also to bolster one another, make connections, and celebrate the work of school librarians. It is my hope AASL members will be inspired to volunteer and contribute their time and expertise to assist in the planning of our 2025 AASL National Conference in St. Louis.”

Along with professional learning, the AASL National Conference is an opportunity for school librarians across the country to build professional learning networks and unite as a community. The conference allows school librarians to feel connected, rally spirits, and refresh their dedication to the field. To fulfill the needs of attendees, national conference committee members will be responsible for providing opportunities to connect, identifying current educational needs, and providing dynamic professional development.

Available committee positions include conference co-chairs, programming co-chairs, author co-chairs, local arrangements co-chairs, and social media co-chairs. Information on the specific responsibilities of each position is available at www.ala.org/aasl/app.

Service on the national conference committee is a significant commitment. Once finalized, the committee will meet each month virtually and attendance is required. Members must work collaboratively with other committee members, meet critical dates and deadlines, and maintain their /AASL membership during their appointment.

Applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. on April 4. All applicants will be notified as to appointment decisions by June 1.

Bryan is the director of library services for the Houston Independent School District. Len’s previous roles include technical systems manager for Denver Public Schools; district media specialist in Hillsboro, Oregon; and school program coordinator for the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. A former middle school and high school librarian, Len served on the inaugural AASL Standards Implementation Committee from 2018 until 2020. He also serves as an advisor for Future Ready Schools.

Using brand behavior to elevate the school library

The session will also share strategies for crafting effective messaging to fight censorship and promote equity in education. AASL National Conference Closing Session Features Authors on the Right to Read

CHICAGO – A panel of authors sponsored by We Need Diverse Books (WNDB) will close out the 2023 AASL National Conference taking place October 19-21 in Tampa, Florida. The moderated panel will include bestselling authors Samira Ahmed, Phil Bildner, and Tracey Baptiste and the authors will present concrete ideas for how to respond to censorship attempts in the school library. During “Authors on the Right to Read,” panelists will present strategies and resources educators can use when responding to parents initiating challenges. Strategies will include how to book talk a challenged book effectively; how to get support from the greater community; how to get resources from the publishing community of writers, publishing professionals, activists; and how to start a book club and get the parents and students involved.

"Since its inception in 2014, We Need Diverse Books has worked to raise awareness on how librarians can ensure diversity on their school library shelves and in programming," said Paige Battle, conference co-chair. AASL Announces Inaugural Toor Scholarship Recipients

CHICAGO – Eight school librarians from across the country have been awarded an American Association of School Librarians' (AASL) Toor Scholarship for Strong Public-School Libraries. The Toor Family, in honor of their parents, Jay and Ruth Toor, established the Toor Scholarships for Strong Public-School Libraries. The scholarships are awarded to public school librarians who have created and implemented a local public awareness/marketing campaign that promotes and positions their school library as a necessary resource in the community.

“We could not have asked for a better inaugural class of Toor Scholarship recipients,” said Hilda Weisburg, award committee chair. “These projects will have a lasting impact and reinforce the reach of the school library, with a certified school librarian, to all of those inside and outside the walls of a school. Most importantly these exciting projects offer easily replicable pieces for all school librarians to implement.”

The Toor Scholarship for Strong Public-School Libraries provides a $1,000 scholarship to cover travel to attend the biennial AASL National Conference. Recipients will participate in a concurrent session panel to present their local public awareness/marketing campaign. Additional promotion of campaigns will include opportunities to publish articles and host webinars on AASL’s various platforms. Kathy Lester, AASL president, said, “As school librarians we so often don’t see that what we do every day, how we serve our learners, our colleagues, and our communities, is advocacy. Someone can’t miss what they never had and so it’s vital for the role of the school library and certified school librarian to be continually seen and reinforced. I want to thank the Toor Family for these scholarships that highlight the work of my colleagues and offer endless opportunities for their peers to use and build from their work.”

Weisburg also wanted to “appreciate the support from the Toor Family for these scholarships and recognizing their lasting impact to continue to reinforce AASL’s vision which aligns perfectly to the work of her friend and colleague Ruth Toor that Every school librarian is a leader; every learner has a school librarian.”

AASL opens call for Poster and IdeaLab Proposals

CHICAGO – AASL invites proposals for Poster and IdeaLab Presentations, to be presented Thursday, October 19, 2023, in Tampa, Florida. Complete proposals must be submitted by Thurs., July 6, 2023. To submit a proposal, visit national.aasl.org.

New this year, AASL is offering school librarians, educators, administrators, and community partners the opportunity to submit a poster presentation. Submissions are invited on any topic relevant to school libraries and may include a description of an innovative library program or practice; an analysis of a solution to a problem; a report of a research study; or any other presentation that would benefit attendees. Poster session presenters populate boards with pictures, data, graphs, diagrams, and narrative text and informally discuss their poster with conference attendees during the presentation session. The AASL Poster Presentations will occur on Thursday, October 19, 2023, from 1:00-3:00 pm. The posters will then be moved to the exhibit hall for the remainder of the conference.

The AASL IdeaLab showcases best practices, innovative ideas, and adaptive projects and practices. Small program presentations should offer visuals in handouts, laptop presentations, or samples. The AASL IdeaLab is considered the "speed learning" of the conference. While attendees will engage and explore with "Ideas" that spark further interest, presenters should generally be able to explain their table in 2-3 minutes to groups who visit. The AASL IdeaLab will occur on Thursday, October 19, 2023, from 1:00-3:00 pm.
