American Libraries recognizes 12 libraries in its 2024 Library Design Showcase

CHICAGO - Twelve new and renovated libraries, as well as their architects, have been recognized in American Libraries’ 2024 Library Design Showcase. The showcase appears in the magazine’s September/October issue, available online today.

The 36th annual showcase highlights innovative constructions and remodels across the US and Canada that address patrons’ evolving needs. All projects in this year’s selection were completed between May 1, 2023, and April 30, 2024. The buildings—comprising public and academic libraries and one operations center—demonstrate how libraries are adapting their spaces to better support people, programming, and sustainability efforts.

CHICAGO – The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) announces the publication of “Information Literacy and Social Media: Empowered Student Engagement with the ACRL Framework” by Michele Santamaría and Nicole Pfannenstiel, demonstrating how to engage students with and through social media platforms and teach them to embrace their role as information creators through engagement with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.

Teaching our students how to become flexible and accurate evaluators of information requires teaching them adaptable processes and not static heuristics. Our conventional information literacy teaching and learning tools are simply not up to tackling the life-long, real-world challenges and transferable applications required by today’s evolving information landscape.

"Information Literacy and Social Media" provides librarians and non-librarian practitioners with ways to teach and learn with social media. It addresses how to broadly conceptualize information literacy teaching with social media and allay any student reluctance to using social media for academic purposes. It proposes how to map some of the ACRL threshold concepts onto specific social media platforms, including Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok, while providing general guidance for if and when those platforms change.

There are eight concrete, cross-disciplinary lesson plans that factor in design, assessment, and student engagement. These lesson plans offer multiple platform ideas so readers can remix the approach to suit their learning contexts. Finally, applying information literacy dispositions, the book considers how up-and-coming platforms might empower students to be critical content creators and encourage librarians and faculty to support and create new information literacy initiatives on their campuses. CHICAGO – The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) announces the publication of “Spatial Literacy in Public Health: Faculty-Librarian Teaching Collaborations,” edited by Laureen P. Cantwell-Jurkovic and Tammy Parece, a collection of ideas and plans for collaborative spatial literacy teaching and learning initiatives focusing on geographic information systems (GIS)-based and GIS-related instruction through the lens of public health topics.

Spatial literacy—the ability to visualize, understand, and use the properties of space to communicate, reason, and problem-solve—is relevant across a wealth of disciplines. “Spatial Literacy in Public Health" offers step-by-step learning activities, teaching tips, recommended readings, and four-color maps as well as other useful illustrations. These not only support student learning, but also professional development for librarians interested in spatial literacy instruction and in pitching such instruction to potential faculty collaborators. Interdisciplinary topics include supply chain management, social media campaigns, data visualization, racial disparities, and other demographic themes related to immunization patterns, epidemiology, recreation access, and community health and environmental health/environmental science.

Practical approaches to inclusive cataloging

CHICAGO — As part of the profession's ongoing EDISJ efforts to redress librarianship’s problematic past, practitioners from across the field are questioning long-held library authorities and standards. They’re undertaking a critical and rigorous re-examination of what have been considered “best practices” and the decisionmakers behind them, pointing out heretofore unscrutinized injustices within our library systems of organization and making concrete steps towards progressive change. “Inclusive Cataloging: Histories, Context, and Reparative Approaches,” published by Editions in collaboration with Core Publishing, details the efforts of some of the many librarians who are working to improve our systems and collections, in the process inspiring those who have yet to enact change by demonstrating that this work is scalable, possible, and necessary. From this book, edited by Amber Billey, Elizabeth Nelson, and Rebecca Uhl, readers will:

gain an understanding of the theoretical underpinning for the actions that create our history and be challenged to reconsider their perspectives;
learn about the important role of the library catalog in real-world EDISJ initiatives through examples ranging from accessibility metadata and gendered information to inclusive comics cataloging and revising LC call numbers for Black people and Indigenous people;
discover more than a dozen case studies drawn from a variety of contexts including archives, academic and public libraries, and research institutions; and
see ways to incorporate these ideas into their own work, with a variety of sample policies, “how to” documents, and other helpful tools provided in the text.

Billey served as the Chair of the Leadership Team for the Core Metadata & Collection Section and Co-Chair of the Core Diversity and Inclusion Committee. She is a member of the PCC Advisory Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and was Chair of the PCC Ad Hoc Task Group on Gender in Name Authority Records. She serves on the Advisory Board for the Digital Transgender Archive, and the editorial board for the Homosaurus – a linked data thesaurus for the LGBTQ+ community. Previously, she was the Associate Director for Bibliographic Services at Bard College. Nelson is the Cataloging and Collection Development Librarian and Library Department Chair at McHenry County College, where she has worked since 2008. She is also the current editor of Library Leadership & Management. Uhl has over 30 years’ experience as a catalog and authority control librarian at Arizona State University. Currently serving as the Principal on the Acquisitions and Metadata Services team, she has experience as a manager, supervisor and department head, in addition to copy and original cataloging in all formats.

The former Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), the Library Information Technology Association (LITA), and the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) are now Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures, a new division of . Its mission is to cultivate and amplify the collective expertise of library workers in core functions through community building, advocacy, and learning.

Strengthening library ecosystems using One Voice

CHICAGO — A patron of one library is the potential patron of any other library at a different time of life or location. And though each library serves its own unique community, when different kinds of libraries speak together with one voice, the entire library ecosystem is stronger. Distilling the work of 's Ecosystem Task Force, the new book “Strengthening Library Ecosystems: Collaborate for Advocacy and Impact,” published by Editions, will guide library organizations in assessing and extending the strength of their ecosystems by identifying priorities for advocacy and legislation. Written by Dorcas Hand, Sara Kelly Johns, Michelle Robertson, and Eryn Duffee, its flexible framework can apply to the library ecosystem at any level and can accommodate all types of libraries and library organizations, including Friends groups and trustees, vendors, and literacy groups. In this book, readers will:

learn what constitutes a library ecosystem and how diverse libraries can unite around common goals and values;
see the ways in which various library types (school, public, and academic) overlap in mission, share the same core values, and can better view each another as essential allies;
be introduced to the elements of ecosystem thinking, including components such as effective leadership, communication, collaboration, and sustainability for advocacy success;
come to understand how to apply ecosystem ideas to bolster legislative advocacy and combat censorship attempts;
grasp the contrasts between “going it alone,” which can devolve into fragmented messaging and unfocused action at cross-purposes with other libraries, and speaking together with One Voice, as illustrated through real-world examples and case studies; and
get an assortment of practical tip sheets, discussion questions, points to consider, and other helpful prompts and guideposts for setting out on their own ecosystem journey.

Hand, MLS, is a retired school librarian from Houston, Texas and a co-chair of Students Need Libraries in Houston ISD, a grassroots advocacy effort. She chaired the Ecosystem Initiative Task Force to write the Ecosystem Toolkit and Continuum and remains a member of ’s COLA Ecosystem Subcommittee, presenting on ecosystem topics often. Johns, an online instructor at the Syracuse University iSchool and a long-time school librarian, is a past president of AASL, the New York Library Association (NYLA), and the Section of School Librarians of NYLA. She received the NYLA Lifetime Achievement Award and the first AASL Social Media Superstar Advocacy Ambassador Award. Active in Council and committees, Johns was a member of the Implementation Task Force for the National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries. She is co-author of "Elevating the School Library: Building Positive Perceptions through Brand Behavior" and has written articles for several school library publications and contributed chapters for various books. Robertson, MLIS, PhD, is currently the program coordinator and assistant professor for library media in education at the University of Central Oklahoma. She is a member of ’s Ecosystem Subcommittee as well as ’s Public Awareness Committee. She has worked for several years to build the library ecosystem in Oklahoma. Duffee, MLIS, is a teacher librarian near Seattle, Washington, who has led advocacy committees and who founded the Tennessee Library Ecosystem Coalition. Eryn’s work earned Tennessee the Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Award. She was recognized with the Library Journal Movers & Shakers Award in 2023.
