Practical approaches to inclusive cataloging

CHICAGO — As part of the profession's ongoing EDISJ efforts to redress librarianship’s problematic past, practitioners from across the field are questioning long-held library authorities and standards. They’re undertaking a critical and rigorous re-examination of what have been considered “best practices” and the decisionmakers behind them, pointing out heretofore unscrutinized injustices within our library systems of organization and making concrete steps towards progressive change. “Inclusive Cataloging: Histories, Context, and Reparative Approaches,” published by Editions in collaboration with Core Publishing, details the efforts of some of the many librarians who are working to improve our systems and collections, in the process inspiring those who have yet to enact change by demonstrating that this work is scalable, possible, and necessary. From this book, edited by Amber Billey, Elizabeth Nelson, and Rebecca Uhl, readers will:

gain an understanding of the theoretical underpinning for the actions that create our history and be challenged to reconsider their perspectives;
learn about the important role of the library catalog in real-world EDISJ initiatives through examples ranging from accessibility metadata and gendered information to inclusive comics cataloging and revising LC call numbers for Black people and Indigenous people;
discover more than a dozen case studies drawn from a variety of contexts including archives, academic and public libraries, and research institutions; and
see ways to incorporate these ideas into their own work, with a variety of sample policies, “how to” documents, and other helpful tools provided in the text.

Billey served as the Chair of the Leadership Team for the Core Metadata & Collection Section and Co-Chair of the Core Diversity and Inclusion Committee. She is a member of the PCC Advisory Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and was Chair of the PCC Ad Hoc Task Group on Gender in Name Authority Records. She serves on the Advisory Board for the Digital Transgender Archive, and the editorial board for the Homosaurus – a linked data thesaurus for the LGBTQ+ community. Previously, she was the Associate Director for Bibliographic Services at Bard College. Nelson is the Cataloging and Collection Development Librarian and Library Department Chair at McHenry County College, where she has worked since 2008. She is also the current editor of Library Leadership & Management. Uhl has over 30 years’ experience as a catalog and authority control librarian at Arizona State University. Currently serving as the Principal on the Acquisitions and Metadata Services team, she has experience as a manager, supervisor and department head, in addition to copy and original cataloging in all formats.

The former Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), the Library Information Technology Association (LITA), and the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) are now Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures, a new division of . Its mission is to cultivate and amplify the collective expertise of library workers in core functions through community building, advocacy, and learning.

Social Responsibilities Round Table highlights programming for Annual Conference

CHICAGO – The Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) is pleased to share upcoming programming this summer.

At ’s Annual Conference in San Diego, SRRT will convene session called “Combatting Voter Suppression in Your Library which will be a discussion about how librarians and libraries can combat voter suppression in an age of rampant mis- and disinformation Saturday, June 29 from 2:30-3:30 pm PDT. Following Annual, SRRT’s next Afternoon of Social Justice will be held on July 31, 2024, with more details to come.

SRRT has long been known for exploring issues and promoting conversations that propel the professioto think critically about local and global concerns. Our programming committee reflects that spirit by hosting events that call people in and bring diverse perspectives to bear on timely issues.

In 2023, SRRT held three virtual events. On July 13, 2023, the round table hosted a book discussion on Matthew Desmond’s “Poverty, by America” that included facilitated group learning circles.

On August 18, 2023, the Afternoon of Social Justice session featured speakers who shared a feminist perspective on the wars in Ukraine and Sudan and religious fundamentalism in Iran; a discussion about how libraries can become more culturally and physically equitable, diverse, and inclusive spaces to those with disabilities; and a screening and moderated discussion of the documentary film, Boycott.

On November 15, 2023, SRRT convened a panel, “Intellectual Freedom, Social Responsibility, and Praxis in Librarianship and Education,” which included a K-12 school librarian, public librarian, and university professor and focused on the intensified battles around book bans, censorship, public and school library funding, Critical Race Theory, African American Studies pedagogy, gender identity, and sexual orientation.

This year, SRRT hosted a monthly Current World Events Discussion Series for Library Staff & Community Members to raise awareness of and provide resources related to critical social, political, and economic issues and build media and information literacy

In March 2024, SRRT convened the two-day virtual summit, Abolitionist Visions and Intersections: Centering Human Relationships and Building Institutional Connections with Social Justice. The 15 sessions featured speakers who brought diverse perspectives and lived experiences to intersectional issues and provocative ideas. Sessions touched on information access and censorship in carceral settings, creative arts programming in prisons, archival stewardship of incarcerated persons’ records, inclusive library design, and innovative public library programming to serve vulnerable and reentry populations. The event also included two film screenings.

The Programming Committee strives to broaden our programming and identity’s reach by appealing to new and different audiences and promoting cross-sector conversations and interdisciplinary connections. The Social Responsibilities Round TableSRRT is a Roundtable within the ��ϲʿ��app. It works to make more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

Supporting sustainable development goals through information science

CHICAGO — The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 universal goals adopted by the UN in 2015. “Information for Sustainable Development: Technology, People and Society,” published by Facet Publishing and available through the Store, provides a global perspective on the current progress of SDGs by comparing regions and examining the challenges each region faces, including data availability and completeness. Offering an information science perspective on measuring performance and assessing progress in achieving these goals, G.G. Chowdhury and Sudatta Chowdhury also explore how, in addition to data and technology, different human and social issues are vital for achieving success in different SDGs. Sudatta Chowdhury is a Research Associate in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Strathclyde. Her research focuses on information-seeking behavior and human-centered challenges for access to information. She has co-authored five books and several journal and conference papers and book chapters.

Core Webinar - Best of Core Forum: White Supremacy in the Stacks

CHICAGO—Core hosts the webinar "Best of Core Forum: White Supremacy in the Stacks" on May 7, 2024, at 1 p.m. CT. Library classifications exist, in theory, to group books on similar topics together. However, the way in which librarians choose to group books together serves to highlight biases, sometimes conscious and sometimes unconscious. This session examines how Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal Classifications handle books on topics relevant to White Supremacy and how this perpetuates the idea of a color-blind or color-neutral society. By the end of the webinar, attendees will be able to identify problematic classifications in collections, be more intentional about reparative classification, and provide recommendations for how to ameliorate these issues. Anyone involved in cataloging and classification, as well as administrators who might be future decision makers with regards to implementing new systems, is encouraged to attend.

This webinar was previously presented in-person as a session at the 2023 Core Forum. We are hosting this webinar, with the session adapted and presented live as a virtual event, to extend its reach.

CHICAGO—Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) are currently accepting applications for the 11th annual IIDA/ Library Interior Design Awards honoring excellence in library interior design and promoting extraordinary interior spaces across nine categories. Winners and their clients will be honored and showcased during an awards ceremony at the Annual Conference in San Diego. The submission deadline has been extended through April 9.

Open to any interior designer, interior architect, or architect, the IIDA/ Library Interior Design Awards highlight library interior design projects in the following categories:
