The thoroughly revised second edition of “The Readers' Advisory Guide to Street Literature,” published by Editions, will help library workers, teachers, and other community-based educators encourage reading and library use by meeting patrons' reading interests and information needs. Vanessa Irvin’s coverage is fortified by professional narratives from her experiences as a public librarian in Philadelphia, an updated treatment of canonical and contemporary book titles, and scholarly references that reflect her research background in library and information science. Attuned to the needs of novices and devotees alike, this guide:

sketches out the rich history of the urban fiction, showing why it appeals so strongly to readers and providing a quick way for street lit novices to get up to speed on understanding the genre;

demonstrates why promoting street lit means promoting literacy;

explores how authors, readers, and librarians read and respond to the genre and one another;

covers a variety of subgenres in terms of scope, popularity, style, major authors, and works;

shares approaches to readers’ advisory (RA) founded on creating trust between the patron and the librarian; and

offers pointers on collection development and library programming.

Irvin is an Associate Professor of Library Science at East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina. Library classifications exist, in theory, to group books on similar topics together. However, the way in which librarians choose to group books together serves to highlight biases, sometimes conscious and sometimes unconscious. This session examines how Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal Classifications handle books on topics relevant to White Supremacy and how this perpetuates the idea of a color-blind or color-neutral society. By the end of the webinar, attendees will be able to identify problematic classifications in collections, be more intentional about reparative classification, and provide recommendations for how to ameliorate these issues. Anyone involved in cataloging and classification, as well as administrators who might be future decision makers with regards to implementing new systems, is encouraged to attend.

This webinar was previously presented in-person as a session at the 2023 Core Forum. The panelists are engaged in building better models for preservation, responding to the ways that existing standards and best practices create barriers for their communities and promote extractive practices. Their work highlights the importance of meaningful relationships for rethinking preservation work in ways that address community needs. The panel will further address the overarching issues of the lack of diversity among preservation professionals and lack of representation in the archives field.

Building Better Models for Preservation
Live Webinar: Thursday, May 2, 2024, 1 - 2 p.m. CT

Presenters:

Gracen Brilmyer, Assistant Professor and Disability Archives Lab Director, School of Information Studies, McGill University, Montreal, QC, Canada (disabilityarchiveslab.com)
Leesa Kelly, Executive Director, Memorialize the Movement, Minneapolis, MN, USA (https://www.memorializethemovement.com/)
Gerry Lawson, Oral History and Language Lab Manager, Museum of Anthropology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada (https://www.indigitization.ca/)

Registration Fees: Free for all attendees!

This free webinar is being offered as part of Preservation Week 2024, celebrated April 28 - May 4, 2024. Preservation Week is supported by Core.
