Call for Committee Volunteers for 2025-2027

Members are invited to volunteer for standing committees for the 2025-2027 term. Serving on an standing committee provides members with opportunities to:

Gain valuable professional development and leadership experience
Make an impact on key issues and policies within and librarianship
Engage with colleagues from various types of libraries across the nation
Build their resume

Members can sign up to volunteer via the online volunteer form. Please complete and submit the form electronically (be sure to select "" in the drop-down menu on the main form). To be considered for the 2025-2027 term, forms must be submitted no later than October 14, 2024 [please note this is an extended deadline from the originally announced date of September 30, 2024]. Any forms received after this date will be considered for the next term (2026-2028).

President-elect Sam Helmick will make committee appointments, in consultation with the Committee on Committees & Committee on Appointments, with notifications sent to appointed individuals throughout Spring 2025 for terms beginning July 1, 2025. Most member terms will extend through June 30, 2027.

Members can also express interest in serving as a Committee Chair (typically one-year appointments) or Committee Associate (see Associate guidelines here) in their applications.

Sam Helmick chosen 2024-2025 ��ϲʿ��app president-elect

CHICAGO — The ��ϲʿ��app Council decided on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, that Sam Helmick will be the 2024-2025 president-elect effective immediately.

Helmick, who is Community & Access Services Coordinator at Iowa City Public Library, was recommended by the Executive Board and confirmed by the Council.

bylaws specified the process for replacing Ray Pun, who stepped down in June for health reasons after being elected as ’s president-elect by members.

"I am honored to be appointed as president-elect of the ��ϲʿ��app,” Helmick said. “Together, we will continue to elevate the essential work of ensuring informational access for all and upholding intellectual freedom. The collective efforts of members and library workers around the globe empower communities, enrich lives, and safeguard the principles of open knowledge and free expression. "

Helmick was a member of the Executive Board until earlier this month at the end of their term and is immediate past president of the Iowa Library Association. They previously served as former chair-elect on the Intellectual Freedom Round Table and chair of the Iowa Governor’s Commission of Libraries. They have served on committees for the Network of the National Library of Medicine, the Stonewall Book Awards, the Policy Monitoring Committee, Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Michael L. Printz Committee, the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) Sophie Brody Award Committee and the YALSA Fundraising Task Force. Helmick is a 2016 Emerging Leader, as well as an author, consultant, and instructor for social media marketing and graphic design.

Helmick holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Services from Iowa Wesleyan University and a Master of Science in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois.

Hohl inaugurated 2024-2025 president

SAN DIEGO - Cindy Hohl, director of policy analysis and operational support at Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library, was inaugurated President for 2024-2025 on Tuesday, July 2, at the Annual Conference in San Diego.

During the inauguration, Hohl unveiled her presidential theme, “A Good Way for ” which will focus on four main pillars of librarianship: intellectual freedom, literacy, learning and leadership.

“We are always stronger together, and we are poised to move forward in a good way, leaving no one to stand alone. Librarians are trusted professionals, and we will continue to stay the course,” Hohl said.

Hohl’s presidential initiatives will include:

Four Summits: The summits will focus on Intellectual Freedom, Leadership, Literacy, and Image/Customer Experience to highlight areas for members to be supported throughout the current challenges and changing environment of libraries.
We All Belong Library Tour: This virtual and in person tour will focus on public, academic, school, special and tribal libraries in urban and rural areas throughout the country highlighting the work of librarians and library workers in these communities while creating bridges within the association.
A Good Way for Webinars: A series of webinars will be held with speakers in the areas of indigenous knowledge, leadership, literacy and lifelong learning and belonging with Spectrum Scholar Alumni.
Read to Lead Book Club: leaders will facilitate book discussions on leadership titles and share how they apply that context to their work.
All Nations Libguide: A comprehensive library guide will focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, and antiracism practices in libraries highlighting welcoming spaces, belonging for all and sustainability for future generations of library staff and users.

During her term, Hohl plans to lead the creation of an informational toolkit to address Missing, Murdered, Indigenous Women and People in the United States using data, health information and a practical guide for communities when they need information to conduct searches or to share information outside of the community.

Through digital campaigns, Hohl also plans to elevate National Library Workers Day and Unite Against Book Bans and advance advocacy and member retention efforts.

“There has never been a better time to serve our communities within the roles of librarianship and we stand united in our mission to ensure equal access to information for all,” said Hohl.

Hohl is past president of the American Indian Library Association and is an active member of other affiliates, including the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association, Black Caucus of , Chinese American Librarians Association and REFORMA: The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking. As a member of the Missouri Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee, their work was recognized with the Robert B. Downs Award for upholding Intellectual Freedom in Missouri Libraries.

Hohl holds a Bachelor of Science in Organization Management and Leadership from Friends University, a Master of Library and Information Science from Wayne State University, and a Master of Business Administration from Baker University.

Nominating Committee seeks President-elect, Treasurer, & Councilor at Large candidates for 2025 election

CHICAGO — The ��ϲʿ��app () thrives thanks to the energy, diversity, and commitment of its members and leaders. The Nominating Committee encourages members to consider serving the association in various leadership positions. The association should reflect the diversity of our membership, including diverse experiences, races, genders, ethnicities, and both new and experienced members. Currently, the Nominating Committee for the 2025 election is seeking nominees for the positions of president-elect, treasurer and councilor-at-large on the 2025 spring ballot.

The Nominating Committee will select candidates to run for president-elect, treasurer and no fewer than 18 candidates for the 12 at-large council seats to be filled in the 2025 spring election ( Bylaws, Article VI. Council Section 2.E.).

The president is the Association's chief spokesperson and supports advancing the mission of . The president-elect will serve a three-year term: as president-elect in 2025-26, as president in 2026-27, and as immediate past president in 2027-28.

The treasurer is an officer of the Association, a member of the Executive Board, and supports the overall financial health of the . The treasurer will serve a three-year term 2025-28.

The Council is the policy making body of . The councilors-at-large will serve a three-year term 2025-28, beginning after the 2025 Annual Conference and ending at the adjournment of the 2028 Annual Conference.

The president, treasurer, and councilors also serve in corresponding roles in the -Allied Professional Association [-APA]. Individuals considering -APA offices are encouraged to consult with their employer regarding any restrictions pertaining to lobbying activities or service on the governing body of a 501(c)6 organization.

The Nominating Committee may ask for additional information and/or schedule interviews about an individual's candidacy for a leadership position. Nominations and forms must be received no later than September 16, 2024. Members will be notified of their candidacy status after the close of the nomination period. Members who did not complete a nomination form during the nomination period or were not selected by the Nominating Committee may run for office by petition. Members who are interested in running by petition may do so on October 1, 2024.

Strengthening library ecosystems using One Voice

CHICAGO — A patron of one library is the potential patron of any other library at a different time of life or location. And though each library serves its own unique community, when different kinds of libraries speak together with one voice, the entire library ecosystem is stronger. Distilling the work of 's Ecosystem Task Force, the new book “Strengthening Library Ecosystems: Collaborate for Advocacy and Impact,” published by Editions, will guide library organizations in assessing and extending the strength of their ecosystems by identifying priorities for advocacy and legislation. Written by Dorcas Hand, Sara Kelly Johns, Michelle Robertson, and Eryn Duffee, its flexible framework can apply to the library ecosystem at any level and can accommodate all types of libraries and library organizations, including Friends groups and trustees, vendors, and literacy groups. In this book, readers will:

learn what constitutes a library ecosystem and how diverse libraries can unite around common goals and values;
see the ways in which various library types (school, public, and academic) overlap in mission, share the same core values, and can better view each another as essential allies;
be introduced to the elements of ecosystem thinking, including components such as effective leadership, communication, collaboration, and sustainability for advocacy success;
come to understand how to apply ecosystem ideas to bolster legislative advocacy and combat censorship attempts;
grasp the contrasts between “going it alone,” which can devolve into fragmented messaging and unfocused action at cross-purposes with other libraries, and speaking together with One Voice, as illustrated through real-world examples and case studies; and
get an assortment of practical tip sheets, discussion questions, points to consider, and other helpful prompts and guideposts for setting out on their own ecosystem journey.

Hand, MLS, is a retired school librarian from Houston, Texas and a co-chair of Students Need Libraries in Houston ISD, a grassroots advocacy effort. She chaired the Ecosystem Initiative Task Force to write the Ecosystem Toolkit and Continuum and remains a member of ’s COLA Ecosystem Subcommittee, presenting on ecosystem topics often. Johns, an online instructor at the Syracuse University iSchool and a long-time school librarian, is a past president of AASL, the New York Library Association (NYLA), and the Section of School Librarians of NYLA. She received the NYLA Lifetime Achievement Award and the first AASL Social Media Superstar Advocacy Ambassador Award. Active in Council and committees, Johns was a member of the Implementation Task Force for the National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries. She is co-author of "Elevating the School Library: Building Positive Perceptions through Brand Behavior" and has written articles for several school library publications and contributed chapters for various books. Robertson, MLIS, PhD, is currently the program coordinator and assistant professor for library media in education at the University of Central Oklahoma. She is a member of ’s Ecosystem Subcommittee as well as ’s Public Awareness Committee. She has worked for several years to build the library ecosystem in Oklahoma. Duffee, MLIS, is a teacher librarian near Seattle, Washington, who has led advocacy committees and who founded the Tennessee Library Ecosystem Coalition. Eryn’s work earned Tennessee the Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Award. She was recognized with the Library Journal Movers & Shakers Award in 2023.

��ϲʿ��app President Emily Drabinski to embark on cross country library tour

CHICAGO – ��ϲʿ��app President Emily Drabinski will tour the country this June to highlight the contributions of American libraries to their communities.

The “Road to Annual” tour, named for ’s Annual Conference, will kick off in early June at Cranston Public Library in Rhode Island where Drabinski will highlight the importance of federal support for libraries and the Right to Read Act. The tour will conclude in San Diego, the site of the Annual Conference.

“Libraries do so much good work, and the goal of this tour is to elevate libraries across different communities and show how fundamental they are to our country,” said Drabinski. “ is a connector to our libraries and library workers, and I can’t wait to highlight the people who are serving their communities is so many different ways and give them a chance to tell their stories.”

The tour will include stops at libraries in West Virginia, Missouri, Kansas, New Mexico and Arizona on the way to San Diego.

With the support of the Lannan Foundation, filmmaker Nikita Carpenter Jr. will join the tour to document the work happening at the selected libraries. A reel will air during the President’s Program at Annual Conference. A full documentary film will be made available after.

The President’s Program titled, “The Heart of Our Story: A Celebration of Library Workers – a panel session” will celebrate the profound influence library workers exert within their communities, highlighting their good work in big cities and rural communities, in the public eye, and just outside it.

Claudette McLinn elected 2024-2025 ALSC vice-president/president-elect

CHICAGO - Claudette McLinn, EdD, Executive Director, Center for the Study of Multicultural Children’s Literature, Simi Valley, California, has been elected vice president/president-elect of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the ��ϲʿ��app (). She will begin her term as president-elect in July 2024 and assume the presidency in July 2025 for a one-year term.

“I value this opportunity to be of service to the ALSC community,” McLinn said. "I will ensure that the gains made within ALSC continue and flourish. Our collaborative efforts are critical as we aspire to fulfill ALSC’s vision statement by engaging communities to build healthy, successful futures for all children. I am committed to championing advocacy for children and for the library workers who proudly serve children.”

An active member of , ALSC and the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), McLinn has served in numerous capacities during her 44 years of association membership. Currently, she is a member of the Awards Task Force, and served recently on the -Children's Book Council Joint Committee, 2021-2023, and the President Patty Wong Advisory Committee, 2020-2022. McLinn also has served as chair of the 2022 Randolph Caldecott Award Committee, 2017-2019 Coretta Scott King Book Award Executive Board and 2009 Pura Belpré Award Committee.

In addition to her service with , McLinn served on the Executive Board of the United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY), 2019-2023, also acting as liaison to the Hans Christian Andersen Award Jury administered by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY).

Among her many accomplishments, McLinn is Vice Chair of the Board of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. She also recently served as the U.S. representative on the 2024 BolognaRagazzi Award Jury and was a judge and chair of the 2023 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, presenting at the 74th Annual National Book Awards ceremony.

McLinn was the recipient of the 2023 Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement, 2022 Charlotte S. Huck Endowed Speaker Award and 2020 ALSC Distinguished Service Award, among other awards and honors.

Three directors-at-large were elected to serve on the ALSC Board of Directors: Maegen J. Rose, Brooklyn Friends School, New York; Ayn Reyes Frazee, Portland, Oregon; and Sandra Farag, Kalamazoo Public Library, Michigan. Each will serve a three-year term beginning in July 2024.

Kordeliski Elected 2025-2026 AASL President

CHICAGO - The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has announced the results of its 2024 election. Members elected Amanda Kordeliski, Director of Libraries and Instructional Technology for Norman Public Schools in Oklahoma, as the 2024-2025 President-Elect. She will serve as the AASL President during the 2025-2026 term and immediate Past President in 2026-2027.

"Thank you to all the school librarians who voted and participated in the recent and AASL elections," said Kordeliski upon learning of the results. "Elections of our member leaders is such an important part of our association and I extend a deep thank you to all those willing to stand for election and everyone who used their vote as their voice for our association. I am honored beyond measure to be elected as AASL President-Elect and look forward to working within the AASL community to advocate for all school librarians and school libraries across the country. As a division of the ��ϲʿ��app, AASL works collaboratively within the greater organization and library ecosystem to increase understanding and promotion of the integral role of school librarians and school libraries for all learners."

Kordeliski said “While it is a stressful time to be a school librarian, I will listen to the needs of the school library community and work to support and advocate for all school libraries throughout my tenure on the board. I will continue to work toward AASL’s vision that every school librarian is a leader and every learner has a school librarian. There are so many great things happening in our school libraries and I want to highlight and celebrate the successes while continuing the work to resolve the issues and obstacles school librarians are experiencing. Thank you for sharing my passion for libraries, I am looking forward to working with the AASL board, staff, AASL Chapters, and sections over the next several years.”

Currently serving on the AASL Board of Directors as a director at large, Kordeliski has written for AASL’s Knowledge Quest and YALSA’s YALS journal. She is currently an active member of Policy Corps, Unite Against Book Bans, and has served on a wide variety of AASL, , and YALSA committees including co-chair of the AASL Practice Committee, the AASL/ISTE Standards Crosswalk, and the 2023 Printz Committee. Kordeliski is also a past chair of the school library division of the Oklahoma Library Association (OLA) and the OLA Advocacy committee.

The AASL ballot also included seven (7) amendments to the AASL Bylaws that were passed by the vote of the membership.

Brad Warren elected vice-president/president-elect

Brad Warren elected vice-president/president-elect

CHICAGO - Brad Warren, Dean of Libraries at Augusta University, has been elected ACRL Vice-President/President-Elect. Warren will become president-elect in July 2024 and assume the presidency in July 2025 for a one-year term.

Rachel M. Minkin, Interim Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning at Michigan State University, has been elected to the ACRL Board of Directors as Director-at-Large.

Carrie Forbes, Ph.D., University Librarian and Director of the School of Undergraduate Studies and the University Library at Southern Oregon University, has been elected to the ACRL Board of Directors as Director-at-Large.

Five proposed amendments to the ACRL Bylaws were adopted by the ACRL membership.

“I am ecstatic to be elected as the next Vice-President/President-Elect of ACRL! I want to thank the ACRL membership as well as the support of Augusta University, my colleagues, my mentors, and, most importantly, my family for their support and encouragement in enabling me to engage with ACRL in this new role,” Warren said. “I am looking forward to actively working with the Board, organization, and membership to support academic libraries and library workers at all levels. It is a true honor to have the chance to serve in this capacity!”

During his 15 years of ACRL membership, Warren has served as a member of the ACRL Standards Committee (2023-present), ACRL College and Research Libraries Editorial Board (2016-2023), co-chair, ACRL 2023 Conference Contributed Papers Committee (2021-2023), member, ACRL 2021 Conference, multiple committees (2019-2021), convener, ACRL ULS Public Services Directors of Large Research Libraries Discussion Group, (2021-2023) and founder, convener, and member of the ACRL Access Services Interest Group (2016-present).

His knowledge of ACRL, academic librarianship and the broader higher education landscape, along with his leadership, will be valuable to the Board, as it continues to support the profession and advance the ACRL Plan for Excellence.”

Warren’s experience with includes being a member of the Committee on Organization (2020-2022). Warren has also served as a member of the LLAMA (now Core) Program Committee (2015-2018) and Public Relations and Marketing Section Swap and Shop Committee, (2008-2009).

Warren’s activity with state, regional, and other national associations include serving on the Regents Academic Committee on Libraries, University System of Georgia (executive committee member, 2022-present) and ARL Membership Engagement and Outreach Committee (member, 2021-2022). Warren also served on the Strategic Ohio Council for Higher Education Library Council (member 2021-2022), OhioLINK Regional Depository Governing Council (member 2021-2022), Ivies+ Borrow Direct Policy Group (previous chair and member, 2014-2018) and the SOLINET Marketing Group (member, 2006-2007).

Warren’s honors and awards include the Distinguished Achievement in Access Services Award (2016), Concertmaster, New London Community Orchestra (2016-2018), and part of the 1999-2000 inaugural class of the North Carolina State University Library fellowship program.

Other notable accomplishments for Warren include his role as the Inaugural Dean of Augusta University Libraries, where he created a new structure, secured a $1.1M increase to the budget, and completed a second phase renovation of Augusta University’s Greenblatt Library and facility and furniture refreshes of Reese Library in the first two years. Warren led the University of Cincinnati Libraries' Organizational Development initiatives and co-led all aspects of UC Libraries' planning and services in response to the COVID pandemic across 13 jurisdictional libraries. He also led the University of Cincinnati Langsam Library Living Room project to increase more diverse seating and collaborative options.

Additionally, Warren led the service redesign of the Yale Sterling Memorial Library Nave during its 2014 restoration project along with several reorganizations of Access Services operations and services. He also led multiple large-scale service and facilities projects at Yale University Libraries, requiring collaboration and consultation across multiple departments and unionized staff.

Warren founded the ACRL Access Services Interest Group and co-chaired development and completion of Framework for Access Services Librarianship in 2020.

Pun wins 2025-2026 presidency

CHICAGO — Raymond Pun, Academic and Research Librarian at the Alder Graduate School of Education in California has been elected 2024-2025 president-elect of the ��ϲʿ��app ().

Pun received 5,611 votes, while his opponent, Sam Helmick, Community & Access Services Coordinator at Iowa City Public Library, received 2,778 votes.

Upon learning the outcome of the election, Pun said, "Thank you to each and every member who voted, and became part of the community to make our profession and association stronger together. I am truly honored for this opportunity to lead our association with you all. My deepest thanks to Sam Helmick for standing in the election with me during this critical time."

Pun currently serves as the immediate past president of the Chinese American Librarians Association and was past president of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association. Pun previously served on the Council, Policy Corps, and as a member of the advisory committees for two past presidents. Pun is a member of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). Pun is a member of the California Library Association (CLA) Advocacy and Legislation Committee, the Library Freedom Project (LFP), and other affiliates including the American Indian Library Association (AILA), the Black Caucus of (BC), the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL), the Association for Rural and Small Libraries, and REFORMA: The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking. Pun is also a member of the International Relations Round Table (IRRT) and the Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT). In addition to librarianship, Pun is a member of the Committee of 100’s Next Generation Leaders program and a speaker for The Weave Speakers Bureau.

Pun holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from California State University, Fresno; a Master of Library Science from CUNY Queens College; a Master of Arts in East Asian Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in History from St. John’s University in New York.
