Ellis will be discussing his new memoir, Did Everyone Have an Imaginary Friend (Or Just Me)?

Born in Sumter, South Carolina, to a military family, Jay Ellis spent his childhood inventing new personas for every town he landed in. Too many to count. After college, he realized the NBA wasn’t good enough for him and he didn’t want to crush other players’ dreams as he dominated the league so he decided to take his one-man show to Hollywood, where he got his start on BET’s The Game. Now an accomplished actor, philanthropist, and entrepreneur, Ellis is best known for his role as Lawrence on HBO’s Insecure, for which he won an NAACP Image Award. He appeared alongside Tom Cruise, flying jets through the skies, in the Oscar-nominated film in Top Gun: Maverick. When he’s not on set filming he spends the majority of his days cleaning up the messes that his daughter’s imaginary friend “Jack” made. Karma.

ACRL 2025 opening keynote speaker announced

CHICAGO – The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) is pleased to announce Ruha Benjamin as the opening keynote speaker for the ACRL 2025 Conference, “Democratizing Knowledge, Access, and Opportunities,” to be held April 2-5, 2025, in Minneapolis and online.

Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University, Benjamin is the Founding Director of the Ida B. Wells Just Data Lab and author of the award-winning book “Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code,” among many other publications. Her work investigates the social dimensions of science, medicine and technology with a focus on the relationship between innovation and inequity, health and justice, knowledge and power.

Benjamin earned a BA in Sociology and Anthropology from Spelman College, MA and PhD in Sociology from the University of California Berkeley and completed postdoctoral fellowships at UCLA’s Institute for Society & Genetics and Harvard University’s Science, Technology & Society Program. She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including from the American Council of Learned Societies, National Science Foundation, Marguerite Casey Foundation 2020 Freedom Scholar Award and the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching at Princeton. The proposal submission deadline for contributed paper, panel session, and workshop proposals is June 7, 2024. CHICAGO — Today, the ��ϲʿ��app () announced that Academy Award-nominated actor, producer, author, and mental health advocate Taraji P. Henson will present at the 2024 Annual Conference & Exhibition. The conference will be held at the San Diego Convention Center and surrounding hotels in San Diego, California, June 27-July 2, 2024.

Henson joins Annual to discuss her new book, “You Can Be a Good Friend (No Matter What!).” The debut picture book, illustrated by Paul Kellam, and available June 24, 2024, promotes mental wellness, learning socialization skills, embracing the importance of standing in your own uniqueness, and promoting friendship over bullying. It’s the perfect read for easing back-to-school jitters for the new school year, helping children (ages 4-8) overcome anxieties, and classroom/library story time and bedtime reading.

In 2018, Henson, and her best friend, Tracie Jade Jenkins, co-founded the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation (BLHF) honoring the legacy of Henson’s father, Boris Lawrence Henson, who battled untreated mental health issues after returning from the Vietnam War. Motivated by their own experiences and the glaring absence of culturally relevant mental health support, they took a bold step forward and established BLHF with a clear mission: to destigmatize mental health within the Black community and enhance accessibility. The foundation promotes mental health awareness and provides resources and services aimed at tackling the mental health crisis.

PLA wraps 2024 conference with strong attendance and engagement

CHICAGO - The Public Library Association (PLA) welcomed more than 7,500 public library workers, supporters, and vendors nationwide to celebrate all things public libraries at the PLA 2024 Conference, April 3–5, in Columbus, Ohio, and at the virtual conference. From groundbreaking initiatives to state-of-the-art technologies, participants delved into the field's latest trends, exemplary practices, and responsive solutions.

“Continuously adapting to provide essential resources that address changing needs, libraries foster opportunities for cultural exchange, inviting all to explore ideas and diverse perspectives while staunchly defending the freedom to read,” said PLA President Sonia Alcántara-Antoine. “Whether one is a public library professional, advocate, or industry stakeholder, PLA 2024 provided an exceptional platform for networking, knowledge-sharing, and active engagement in a professional movement aimed at shaping the future landscape of public library services.”

Tailored explicitly to cater to the needs of public library professionals, PLA 2024 celebrated innovation, inclusivity, and community empowerment. Standing-room-only sessions addressed topics ranging from partnering to address social service needs to protecting the freedom to read to building leadership and equity. Conference participants visited more than 280 exhibitors; helped stuff more than 1,500 essentials bags for the Community Shelter Board to support people experiencing homelessness; experienced some canine therapy in the Dog Park; and enjoyed Columbus’ hospitality. Overall, the PLA 2024 conference brought an estimated economic impact of $10 million to the city, as reported by Experience Columbus.

The conference began with inspiring remarks from Shola Richards, the bestselling author of "Making Work Work” and "Go Together." With a focus on workplace civility, Richards has earned global recognition for his passionate advocacy of kindness-driven change, extending his influence across diverse arenas, including leading universities, healthcare institutions, Silicon Valley, and the TEDx stage.

The conference's Big Idea Series, featuring acclaimed author and co-founder of the Abolitionist Teaching Network, Dr. Bettina Love, and climate change writer Mary Annaïse Heglar, drew significant interest, focusing on youth education, social justice, and anti-racism. Attendees also had the opportunity to engage with other esteemed authors such as Gennifer Choldenko, Fiona Davis, Amanda Jones, Loren Long, Daniel Nayeri, Molly Knox Ostertag, Rainbow Rowell, Maleeha Siddiqui, and Greg Wands.

The Closing Session, featuring comedian Dulcé Sloan, offered a delightful conclusion to the event. As one of the sharpest, fastest-rising voices in comedy, Sloan has been recognized by Variety magazine as one of the Top 10 Comedians to Watch. Her first memoir, “Hello, Friends!: Stories of Dating, Destiny, and Day Jobs,” provides a comedic glimpse into the life of one of the country’s most exciting comedians.

CHICAGO—Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) are currently accepting applications for the 11th annual IIDA/ Library Interior Design Awards honoring excellence in library interior design and promoting extraordinary interior spaces across nine categories. Winners and their clients will be honored and showcased during an awards ceremony at the Annual Conference in San Diego. The submission deadline has been extended through April 9.

Open to any interior designer, interior architect, or architect, the IIDA/ Library Interior Design Awards highlight library interior design projects in the following categories:

Public Libraries Over 30,000 sq. ft.
Academic Libraries 30,000 sq. ft. & smaller

CHICAGO — Today, the ��ϲʿ��app () announced two speakers that will present at the 2024 Annual Conference & Exhibition. The conference will be held at the San Diego Convention Center and surrounding hotels in San Diego, California, June 27-July 2.

Ali Velshi is an award-winning journalist; host of "Velshi and Chief Correspondent for MSNBC;" and a weekly economics contributor to NPR’s "Here And Now." He hosts the “Velshi Banned Book Club” on MSNBC, and the “Velshi Banned Book Club” podcast. He has covered multiple U.S. Midterm and Presidential elections and significant news stories around the globe, including extensive reporting from Israel during the war with Hamas, Ukraine and across Central and Eastern Europe during the Russian invasion, the Syrian refugee crisis from Turkey and Jordan, the Iran Nuclear Deal in Tehran, and the Greek debt crisis in Athens. Velshi is known for his immersive on-the-ground reporting and his interactive discussions with small groups, which form part of his ongoing series, "Velshi Across America." He previously worked as an anchor and correspondent for Al Jazeera America and CNN.

Velshi will discuss his new book "Small Acts of Courage: A Legacy of Endurance and the Fight for Democracy," available May 2024. Velshi taps into 125 years of family history to advocate for social justice as a living, breathing experience—a way of life more than an ideology. He relates the stories of regular people who made a lasting commitment to fight for change, even when success seemed impossible. It is a heartfelt exploration of how we can breathe new life into the principles of pluralistic democracy, an urgent call to action—for progress to be possible, we must all do whatever we can to make a difference.

Maggie Nichols is a five-time National Team Member on the US Gymnastics team, a World Champion and World Bronze Medalist, six-time individual National Champion, and NCAA Women's Gymnastics Champion. She will join us to discuss her official memoir, "Unstoppable!," available now. The inspirational tell-all, with an introduction written by Simone Biles, offers an intimate look into the world of elite gymnastics, the sexual abuse scandal that shattered lives and dreams, and how she risked everything in the name of justice. CHICAGO — The Public Library Association (PLA) is pleased to announce Shola Richards, founder and CEO of “Go Together” and best-selling author, will open the PLA 2024 Conference, taking place April 3–5, 2024, in Columbus, Ohio. Richards replaces Dr. Joy Buolamwini, who will no longer be able to keynote due to unforeseen circumstances.

Richards is a dynamic keynote speaker, the best-selling author of "Making Work Work” and "Go Together," an in-demand workplace civility expert, and a prolific writer with a passionate worldwide following. His articles and popular Monday morning "Go Together Movement" email series have impacted people in over 160 countries, and his work has been featured on the Today Show, CBS This Morning, Forbes, Black Enterprise, and more.

He is leading a worldwide movement to change the world based on how we treat each other at work. As a speaker, Richards has shared his powerful message with top universities, leading healthcare organizations, Silicon Valley, the motion picture industry, and on the TEDx stage. In 2021, he testified in the House of Representatives on Capitol Hill to share his expert recommendations on how to bring more civility to Congress.

ALSC Annual Preconference - Bilingual Storytime Academy

CHICAGO - On Friday, June 28, 2024, the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) will present a half-day preconference, "Bilingual Storytime Academy," during the 2024 Annual Conference & Exhibition in San Diego.

This interactive preconference will provide an easy-to-follow framework for library workers who deliver Spanish bilingual storytime; for optimal learning, attendees should have a basic grasp of Spanish and storytime conventions. Attendees will learn about the selection of appropriate texts, how to prepare texts for storytime, translation practices to produce materials, and bilingual facilitation to implement programs that are rich in early literacy practices, linguistically sound, and culturally affirming. They will also engage in a sing-along to learn new songs, rhymes and finger plays – complete with manipulatives.

CHICAGO—Join Core during the 2024 Annual Conference & Exhibition in San Diego, CA for the full-day preconference event "AvramCamp: An Unconference for Women and Non-binary Technology Library Workers". Each year Core sponsors AvramCamp, a safe and welcoming space for women and non-binary technology library workers to explore common challenges faced, learn strategies for dealing with them, and discuss specific tools to build confidence. Inspired by AdaCamp, AvramCamp begins by exploring Imposter Syndrome, the feeling that you aren’t actually qualified for the work you are doing and will be discovered as a fraud. Using the unconference model, participants then have the opportunity to choose the topics most relevant to them for discussion, such as salary negotiation, how to advocate for accomplishments/invisible work, and ways to promote diversity and equity in tech environments.
