Event Forge Collaborative Playbook to Address Censorship Challenges and Protect Free Expression

WASHINGTON - The ��ϲʿ��app () convened a third Intellectual Freedom Summit in its nearly 150-year history, bringing together national organizations, publishing allies, educational institutions, foundations, authors and other champions of intellectual freedom. The event, which was held at the Library of Congress on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, aims to forge strong partnerships and shape strategy to battle the rising tides of censorship.

“As we gathered at the world’s largest library, we identified strategies to respond to the withdrawal and censorship of information,” said Cindy Hohl, president of the ��ϲʿ��app. “We are joining forces to lift ourselves and ultimately our country above the fray of polarization and politicization of access to information.”

The last Intellectual Freedom Summit, held in 1953, produced the seminal Freedom to Read Statement, a vital document published in response to the censorship pressures of the McCarthy era. That statement, enthusiastically approved by the American Book Publishers Council, remains a foundational text for the protection of intellectual freedom in America.

This year’s summit builds on that legacy, inviting a broad and diverse coalition of voices to collaborate on a new playbook that addresses emerging censorship challenges. New and traditional allies will work together to ensure that all Americans, regardless of political perspective or belief, can continue to be a free people who read freely.

Banned Books from the Big Chair returns for 2024 Annual Conference & Exhibition

Sage, the ��ϲʿ��app, the Banned Books Week Coalition, and Unite Against Book Bans are partnering to bring Banned Books from the Big Chair back to the 2024 Annual Conference and Exhibition!

To counter the unparalleled rise in censorship attempts in libraries and schools, Sage and its partners reimagined the banned books video read out with Banned Books from the Big Chair – an opportunity for Annual attendees to share their love for banned books by reading them from a very big chair!

Everyone is invited to the Banned Books from the Big Chair booth in Lobby E of the San Diego Convention Center (near the Connect booth and the main Exhibits entrance), to record videos of themselves reading from their favorite banned book, make a call to action, and be “Freed Between the Lines” together! Join us on Saturday and Sunday during exhibit hours (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) to participate in the video readout. You can bring your own copy of a banned book, but ’s Office for Intellectual Freedom has graciously lent titles from its own collection for use in the read out.

The Banned Books from the Big Chair videos will be shared on YouTube as a part of Banned Books Week 2024, which takes place September 22-28. The theme of Banned Books Week 2024 is Freed Between the Lines, a reminder that we find ourselves, each other, and freedom in reading. The right to read is a shared value that we can all celebrate, but book bans and other attempts to limit information in libraries and schools threaten our rights and freedoms. CHICAGO — The ��ϲʿ��app () and Unite Against Book Bans will host a second annual Rally for the Right to Read: Voters Unite Against Book Bans at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront on Friday, June 28, 2024.

Part of the 2024 Annual Conference & Exhibition, June 27 – July 2, the program will gather librarians and Unite Against Book Bans partners from across sectors and across the country, from publishers to authors, from educators to parents, from library workers to library patrons. Organizations across multiple fields and sectors are joining to stand up for the right to read. The rally will highlight anti-censorship activities from around the nation and celebrate the 2024 recipients of ’s signature intellectual freedom awards.

Nationally renowned writer, cultural critic and MacArthur Genius Grant recipient Hanif Abdurraqib will deliver the keynote address.

The event will honor the courage and resilience of America's librarians and their commitment to protect the freedom to read during a period of unprecedented attacks. The Rally for the Right to Read will recognize the 2024 recipients of the Freedom to Read Foundation's Roll of Honor Award, the Eli M. Oboler Award, the John Phillip Immroth Award and the Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award.

“Library workers nationwide continue to provide access for their communities in the face of book bans and censorship,” said President Emily Drabinski. “The Annual Rally for the Right to Read brings together library workers and advocates to reflect, recharge and refocus our energy on protecting the freedom to read. and our anti-censorship partners across industries are incredibly appreciative of the talented Hanif Abdurraqib for joining us and using his voice to Unite Against Book Bans!”

Hanif Abdurraqib is an award-winning poet, essayist and cultural critic from Columbus, Ohio, and the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Genius grant. His most recent book, There’s Always This Year, was an instant New York Times, USA Today and Indie Next bestseller. A Little Devil in America: Notes in Praise of Black Performance was a National Book Award Finalist and the winner of the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. His other acclaimed works include They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us and Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest.

The Rally for the Right to Read begins with a reception at 7:00 p.m. and the program at 8:00 p.m. All Annual Conference attendees are invited to attend; conference badges are required. Admission is free, and donations to the Unite Against Book Bans campaign are encouraged.

Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools. By focusing on efforts to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. Typically (but not always) held during the last week of September, the annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community — librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas.

’s Office for Intellectual Freedom to benefit from new book of essays

CHICAGO — A new book of essays, “Why Books Still Matter,” inspired by the late First Amendment champion Joyce Meskis, has been released this month, with proceeds going to the ��ϲʿ��app’s Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF).

Meskis, who owned the celebrated independent bookstore Tattered Cover in Denver, was a fierce opponent of book banning, and 16 luminaries in book-related fields and the U.S. Senate have contributed to the book, which is edited by Karl Weber and published by Rivertowns Books.

“The topics of the essays in ‘Why Books Still Matter’ are some of the most important in our country right now, from freedom of speech and censorship to representation so people can see themselves reflected in books and to build empathy,” said President Emily Drabinski. “We are deeply thankful that the proceeds of the book will be donated to ’s Office for Intellectual Freedom to champion libraries in this current landscape of increasing book challenges throughout the country.”

The saw a record 4,240 unique book titles targeted for censorship in 2023, a 65 percent increase from 2022, when 2,571 titles were challenged. OIF tracked 1,247 demands to censor library books, materials and resources in 2023. For additional information about book challenges and how to fight them, visit the Unite Against Book Bans website.

CHICAGO — The ��ϲʿ��app () is pleased to announce the launch of its state Intellectual Freedom Helpline program. Over the next two years, ten pilot program sites will operate a confidential reporting system that will help connect those experiencing censorship attempts with professional support, in-state peers, and referral to OIF as appropriate. The initiative will collect data for inclusion in ’s database of confidential reports documenting censorship attempts nationwide; develop resources and establish best practices to operate an IFH; and develop the expertise and confidence of both those providing and receiving support.

invites state or school library associations or agencies wishing to either establish an Intellectual Freedom Helpline in their state or expand upon the organization’s existing efforts to support librarians and educators addressing censorship in their institutions to apply.

Applications will be accepted between April 3, 2024, and July 14, 2024. Visit the grant guidelines for more information and to access the grant application.

Ten grants, each in the amount of $10,000, will be awarded by August 31, 2024. The Intellectual Freedom Helpline grants are made possible through the generous support of the Acton Family Giving and critical program support is provided by the Mellon Foundation.

Unite Against Book Bans expands book résumé collection for National Library Week

CHICAGO — To commemorate National Library Week, Unite Against Book Bans has expanded its free collection of book résumés to support librarians, educators, parents, students, and other community advocates in their efforts to keep frequently challenged books on shelves. The collection, hosted at the Unite Against Book Bans website at bit.ly/BookResumes, has expanded by more than 50% to support an additional hundred titles.

Unite Against Book Bans launched the book résumé resource in February. Created in partnership with dozens of publishers and with information provided by publishers, librarians, and School Library Journal, these easy-to-print documents are designed to help support access to books that are targeted by censors. Each book résumé summarizes the book’s significance and educational value, including a synopsis, reviews from professional journals, awards, accolades, and more. When possible, the book résumés also include information about how a title has been successfully retained after a demand to censor the book.

National Library Week kicked off the release of the ��ϲʿ��app’s () highly anticipated annual list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2023 and the State of America’s Libraries Report, which highlights the ways that libraries and library workers have taken action to address community needs with innovative and critical services, as well as the challenges brought on by censorship attempts. Monday was also the second annual Right to Read Day, which asked people to contact Congress and to take other actions to stand up to censorship. It’s not too late to participate — visit bit.ly/RightToReadDay throughout National Library Week to send a letter and to find other ways to stand up for libraries.

Public Libraries Saw 92 Percent Increase In Number of Titles Targeted for Censorship Over The Previous Year

CHICAGO — The number of titles targeted for censorship surged 65 percent in 2023 compared to 2022, reaching the highest levels ever documented by the ��ϲʿ��app (). The new numbers released today show efforts to censor 4,240 unique book titles* in schools and libraries. This tops the previous high from 2022, when 2,571 unique titles were targeted for censorship.

’s Office for Intellectual Freedom documented 1,247 demands to censor library books, materials, and resources in 2023. Four key trends emerged from the data gathered from 2023 censorship reports:

Pressure groups in 2023 focused on public libraries in addition to targeting school libraries. The number of titles targeted for censorship at public libraries increased by 92 percent over the previous year; school libraries saw an 11 percent increase.
Groups and individuals demanding the censorship of multiple titles, often dozens or hundreds at a time, drove this surge.
Titles representing the voices and lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC individuals made up 47 percent of those targeted in censorship attempts.
There were attempts to censor more than 100 titles in each of these 17 states: Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

“The reports from librarians and educators in the field make it clear that the organized campaigns to ban books aren’t over, and that we must all stand together to preserve our right to choose what we read,” said Deborah Caldwell-Stone, director of ’s Office for Intellectual Freedom. “Each demand to ban a book is a demand to deny each person’s constitutionally protected right to choose and read books that raise important issues and lift up the voices of those who are often silenced. By joining initiatives like Unite Against Book Bans and other organizations that support libraries and schools, we can end this attack on essential community institutions and our civil liberties."

will unveil its highly anticipated list of the top 10 most challenged books in the U.S. on Monday, April 8, which is Right to Read Day of National Library Week, along with its full State of America's Libraries Report.

"Every challenge to a library book is an attack on our freedom to read. The books being targeted again focus on LGBTQ+ and people of color. Our communities and our country are stronger because of diversity. Libraries that reflect their communities' diversity promote learning and empathy that some people want to hide or eliminate,” said President Emily Drabinski. “Libraries are vital institutions to each and every community in this country, and library professionals, who have dedicated their lives to protecting our right to read, are facing threats to their employment and well-being."

In response to the surge of book challenges and efforts to restrict access to information, launched Unite Against Book Bans, a national initiative to empower readers everywhere to stand together in the fight against censorship. The coalition will mark its second anniversary during National Library Week.

Community advocates, parents, teachers, librarians, and more to have access to free materials to support frequently challenged books

CHICAGO — Unite Against Book Bans, in collaboration with the publishing community, unveils a free collection of book résumés at bookresumes.uniteagainstbookbans.org to support librarians, educators, parents, students, and other community advocates in their efforts to keep frequently challenged books on shelves.

Created in partnership with dozens of publishers and with information provided by publishers, librarians, and School Library Journal, Unite Against Book Bans book résumés are easy-to-print documents designed to help support readers’ access to books that are targeted by censors. Each book résumé summarizes the book’s significance and educational value, including a synopsis, reviews from professional journals, awards, accolades, and more. Where possible, the book résumés also include information about how a title has been successfully retained in school districts and libraries after a demand to censor the book. These documents are in a PDF format that can be downloaded and printed for easy sharing with administrators, book review committees, and the public at board meetings.

“Unite Against Book Bans partners recognized a need for easy-to-access free resources for the many librarians, educators, and community advocates, who are working so hard to ensure that readers can always access an inclusive, diverse collection of books,” said Deborah Caldwell-Stone, ��ϲʿ��app () Director of the Office for Intellectual Freedom. “The work they’re doing — defending the freedom to read — is difficult and hard, and we want to make the task of gathering the information needed to do that easier. Unite Against Book Bans and the publishing community will make hundreds of book résumés available upon launch on Tuesday, February 20, with more to follow in time for National Library Week (April 7–13, 2024). Unite Against Book Bans will continue to work with its publishing partners to regularly expand and update the collection. The documented an unprecedented number of attempts to censor library materials and services in both 2021 and 2022. Censors targeted a staggering 2,571 unique titles in 2022, a 38 percent increase from the previous record of 1,858 set in 2021. Data for 2023 will be released during National Library Week, and it is anticipated that there will be another significant increase in the number of titles targeted for censorship.
