Established in 2022, the grants are intended to support ’s work of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the library field.</p> <p>The grant will cover the expenses of five (5) Black/African American youth or teen services librarians or school librarians/media specialists who work in either public or school libraries. Recipients will receive up to $3000 (and not less than $1,500) to pay for expenses related to attending the Annual Conference including (but not limited to) travel, housing, registration, and a ticket to the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Round Table Breakfast.</p> <p>Jason Reynolds, one of the grant’s namesakes, is excited about the selection of these recipients and commented, “It’s an honor to award these five librarians with this year’s travel grant. Though grants are often seen as gifts, to me, this is an investment in the possibilities of these dedicated public servants, so that they may deposit even greater investments in their communities. And that’s a gift to us all.”</p> <p>The recipients, who were selected by representatives, will be acknowledged on Sunday, June 30, 2024, during the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Round Table Breakfast (CSKBART) at the 2024 ϲʿapp () Conference in San Diego. Grants are funded by Simon &amp; Schuster and administered by .</p> <p>Recipients of this year’s travel grants include the following people.</p> <p><strong>Radhiya Abdul-Raheem</strong></p> <p>Abdul-Raheem currently works as a Youth Services Librarian in the Fulton County Library System (Atlanta, Georgia). She says that choosing to study library science was a defining moment in her life. She is enthusiastic about spreading awareness of the boundless possibilities to those who face various life challenges. She wants to see library services become more accommodating to individuals who have reading and/or physical challenges ─particularly the youth and disabled. She believes that her perspective and life experiences allow her to provide exceptional service and empathy to library patrons. She says she is “especially proud of her contributions in providing cultural programming so that young readers of color can associate reading and exploring with their own brilliance.” Abdul-Raheem is excited to attend the Annual Conference because “it will equip her with knowledge regarding innovative practices in various areas of the profession, such as the use of artificial intelligence.” In addition, conference attendance will “afford her the opportunity to engage in the exchange of ideas with librarians who face similar challenges and achievements in the field, as well as contribute to discussions on building libraries to be more inclusive hubs for information seekers.” She feels confident that attending the conference will ultimately result in more impactful programming and services to the communities in which she works.</p> <p><strong>Torrion Carter</strong></p> <p>Torrion Carter currently works as a School Media Specialist/Librarian in the Historic Cherry Hill Elementary Middle School for Baltimore City Public Schools (Baltimore, Maryland). She believes that attendance at the Annual Conference will be “a pivotal opportunity in her professional growth by allowing her to establish meaningful connections, share knowledge, and foster collaboration.” She says that “The conference's wealth of workshops and sessions will keep her updated on the latest trends in library science and youth/teen services, equipping her to better cater to the evolving needs of young library patrons while inspiring her to continue to advocate for positive change in the library profession.” She also notes that the association’s “dedication to diversity and inclusion mirrors her own values.” She is confident that attendance at the Annual Conference will “introduce her to various initiatives and strategies for promoting diversity and equity in library services, and ultimately empower her to create more inclusive and culturally sensitive programs ─aligning with her passion for advancing library services for Black/African American youth and teens.”</p> <p><strong>Hawa Jalloh</strong></p> <p>Jalloh currently works as a Librarian at the Glenarden Branch of the Prince George's County Memorial Library System (Severn, Maryland). Since she recently took on the responsibility of teen programming, her hope is “to connect with individuals at the Annual Conference who are willing to share knowledge and best practices about how to best serve teens at the library.” She is especially interested in attending sessions focused on teen mentorship, programming, outreach, and social media. She commented, “Not only do I want to get teens in the door to see all that we have to offer, but I want them to stick around ─even if this means expanding our services and moving me out of my comfort zone.” She is confident that attending the Annual Conference will “help her to improve as a librarian as well as enhance her ability to connect with the community” which she describes as a largely underserved population. Her goal in attending the conference is “to gain the tools, knowledge, skills, and relationships that will ensure professional development lasting well beyond the conference.”</p> <p><strong>Teria Richardson</strong></p> <p>Teria Richardson currently works as an Intermediate/Teen Librarian at the Akron-Summit County Library - Maple Valley Branch (Akron, Ohio). Richardson believes that attendance at the Annual Conference will “allow her to encounter professional development on a national level” ─something which she has yet to experience. She acknowledges that “as an information professional, she is called upon to help get information into the hands of people so they can better themselves. This is first possible by learning from more experienced people like the speakers featured at the conference.” In addition to having an opportunity to learn from colleagues, Richardson is confident that she will also gain new insights and tools, while learning new concepts to use when serving her community.</p> <p><strong>William Anthony Taylor</strong></p> <p>Taylor currently works as the Youth Services Director at the Cynthiana-Harrison County Public Library (Cynthiana, Kentucky). Taylor acknowledges that he is not the typical librarian. Commenting that “In a country where a small percentage of librarians are male and an even smaller percentage are Black, I fully realize that I am an extreme minority in my field. Every day I am cognizant of the preconceptions of being a two-fold minority in a position that I love. Being in this position motivates me to be the very best at my job.” He wants to be an example for young children; to let them see that librarians can look like him. For the 2018 cohort of Emerging Leaders, AILA submitted a proposal, “Tribal Libraries, Archives, and Museums of the United States Directory &amp; Interactive Map,” which was shortlisted as one of many project options for the incoming group professionals.</p> <p>The goal of this project was to produce a digital resource that highlights U.S. tribal libraries, museums, and archives with the greater community. This digital resource would also act as an advocacy tool and historical resource for the American Indian Library Association (). It was the project of choice for five library workers from across the country who made up “Team B”. In the four months between the Midwinter and Annual, the team created an online resource map to serve as a visual resource of Tribal Libraries, Archives, and Museums (TLAMs) in the United States and the resource is currently <img alt="EL%20Group" src="/sites/default/files/advocacy/content/EL%20Group.jpg" width="400" height="300" class="align-right" loading="lazy"> housed on <a href="https://ailanet.org/">AILA’s website</a>. The team has continued to work and present on this project beyond the Emerging Leaders program wrap-up date in June.</p> <p>Join us as we get to know this fabulous team of library workers.</p> <h3>Question: Tell us about yourself.</h3> <p><em>Aisha </em><em>Conner-</em><em>Gaten</em><em> (ACG):</em> I'm a Chicago-born West Coaster teaching with tech and promoting intersectional activism in information work.</p> <p><em>Netanel Ganin (NG):</em> I'm a cataloger with a cat. I'm passionate about interrogating our cataloging and metadata systems and their implicit assumptions about knowledge organization.</p> <p><em>Garrison Libby (GL): </em>I'm a reference and instruction librarian at a community college in Virginia with a strong interest in open access, OER, and affordable education.</p> <p><em>J.L. Colbert (JLC):</em> I’m the current Resident Librarian at the University of Utah. I’m a big metadata nerd whose research focuses on the relationship between language and power in descriptive metadata, as well as the question-formation process and information-seeking behavior.</p> <p> </p> <h3>Question: What was your favorite part of this project?</h3> <p><em>ACG: </em>In addition to collaborating with this team, learning more about Indigenous knowledge systems and talking with tribal members about their experiences.</p> <p><em>NG:</em> I think my favorite part was getting to meet such capable, and driven people in AILA and the EL program. I felt like I was contributing to something that would out-live me.</p> <p><em>GL:</em> For me, it was getting to work on a project with impact -- making a tool that will be useful and hopefully raise awareness of tribal institutions. Along with that, getting the opportunity to work with AILA and tribal members and meet some of the incredible people that make all of this happen. </p> <p><em>JLC: </em>Simply creating something that filled a need and was helpful to people was huge, especially considering all the work we did to earn the trust of the tribal libraries.</p> <p> </p> <h3>Question: Tell us about your role and contribution to the project.</h3> <p><em>ACG: </em>I helped develop the survey to collect the institutional data as well as send the survey out. Each of us also took turns with project management including leading meetings, sending follow-up communications, checking in, and designing our reports and presentations.<img alt="Tribal%20Directories%20map" src="/sites/default/files/advocacy/content/Tribal%20Directories%20map.png" width="500" height="281" class="align-right" loading="lazy"></p> <p><em>NG:</em> My biggest contribution was probably in the beginning when I transcribed names and the contact information of institutions from print directories.</p> <p><em>GL: </em>My main role was building the map and website pieces of the tool. After the data was collected, I began assembling that on the map itself and built the website to highlight what we found.</p> <p><em>JLC: </em>I worked with Garrison plotting the libraries on the map, as well as researching the libraries themselves. I also helped make the presentation materials.</p> <p> </p> <h3>Question: What did you learn?</h3> <p><em>ACG:</em> This project showed me that knowledge is not bound to books or computers and that people are still the greatest resource we have. I also learned how we can support cultural projects as a non-native or "outsider". Trust and accountability to our partners are the most important and essential pieces to relationship-building of this type.</p> <p><em>NG: </em>I learned about some of the unique challenges faced by institutions and how their needs aren't always being met by the library community at-large.</p> <p><em>GL:</em> I learned a lot about tribal libraries, archives, and museums. I also learned about the incredible work that both these tribal institutions and AILA are doing to provide and preserve resources for Native communities.</p> <p><em>JLC:</em> I learned the importance of building trust with communities. My philosophy for my work always centers working with communities and learning the importance of gaining trust as part of that was monumental.</p> <p> </p> <p>AILA's executive board thanks its Emerging Leaders Team B library workers for their contributions to this awesome project. EL is a leadership development program which enables newer library workers from across the country to participate in problem-solving work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into 's structure, and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity. </p> <p>On Dec. 1, announced the 50 people selected to participate in its 2018 EL class. PLA provided funding to sponsor two participants, Tracy Drake, an archival specialist with the Chicago Public Library and Aurelia Mandani, formerly an intercultural librarian with Arapahoe Libraries in Denver, who now works at the library of the U.S. Department of Commerce's Boulder (Colo.) Labs. Following the kickoff session which includes orientation and training, the program will continue in an online learning and networking environment for six months. The program culminates with a poster session where the 2018 Emerging Leaders will showcase the results of their project planning work during the 2018 Annual Conference in New Orleans.</p> <p>As part of their experience, Emerging Leader teams have also completed projects that advanced PLA’s programs and helped PLA provide better member service. Elizabeth White, author of <strong><em>Fifty-five, Unemployed, and Faking Normal</em></strong>, will discuss the hidden financial plight of many baby boomers and the pressure to act like everything's OK when everything is not OK.</p> <p> </p> <p>Elizabeth White is an entrepreneur, author, aging solutions advocate, and seasoned non-profit executive with domestic and international expertise in economic development and gender empowerment.</p> <p> </p> <p>White was interviewed recently on PBS NewsHour and her story/articles have appeared in Next Avenue, Forbes, The Huffington Post, Christian Science Monitor, and The Washington Post.</p> <p> </p> <p>Ms. White currently serves as Special Advisor to the Interim Executive Director at Senior Service America (SSA). Before joining SSA, she was the Chief Operating Officer of a mid-size NGO focused on improving the quality of life in Africa, where she managed 1,200 staff via 7 direct reports and operations in 18 African countries. Ms. White also serves as an adjunct professor in the workforce development program at the University of the District of Columbia, and has taught entrepreneurship at Trinity College.</p> <p> </p> <p>Ms. White was Senior Diversity Advisor to the CEO of the Calvert Group, a socially-responsible investment firm based in Washington, DC. There she co-authored the Calvert Women’s Principles which formed the basis of the United Nation’s Women’s Empowerment Principles, the first global code of conduct for corporations focused exclusively on empowering and advancing women in the workplace.</p> <p> </p> <p>Ms. White earned an MBA from Harvard University, a MA in International Studies from Johns Hopkins University, and a BS in Political Science from Oberlin College.
