Resource-sharing librarians often describe their career paths as serendipitous. They happen to get an internship or entry-level position in resource sharing and fall in love with the work. Important concepts for resource sharing like management and copyright can be found in some library school courses, but there is no formal educational pathway that leads to this specialization. The alternative to education is on-the-job training, which can vary widely in efficacy depending on staff knowledge and existing documentation. This is challenging because each library does resource sharing differently depending upon consortial partnership, software, and workflows to meet the unique needs of patrons. Building off a research project where heads of resource sharing from Big Ten Academic Alliance libraries were interviewed and results analyzed through inductive thematic analysis, panelists will answer questions about their career paths. They will identify the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to be successful in the field and discuss recent trends as they offer advice for the next generation of resource sharing libraries.

By the end of this webinar, the participant will be able to:

Identify the key knowledge, skills and abilities needed to be successful in resource sharing

Compare differing career paths that have led to success within the resource-sharing field

Incorporate information on upcoming trends with advice offered by experienced heads of resource sharing into their own career journeys

This webinar is relevant for people who are interested in a career in resource sharing as well as mid-career professionals looking for direction.

Presenters:

Brynne Norton, is the Head, Resource Sharing and Reserves, at the University of Maryland College Park. In this class, we discuss the difference a librarian makes as teacher of information literacy, study skills, time management, and academic writing, and in mentoring and supporting students from first year to graduation.

Existing campus programs may be made up of a retention or enrollment office, career services, and a tutoring center, for example. In these cases, librarians need a seat at that table. In other situations, librarians have an opportunity to create an innovative grass-roots program. Either way, the bottom line for librarians is that student retention is measurable, improves, and the institution thereby graduates informationally literate leaders of the future. Librarians have a place in this entire process.

By the end of this course the participate will be able to:

Conduct and study best practice research

Create a proposal to campus administration to create a grass-roots program, or to become embedded into an existing retention program.

Create and customize institutional information literacy programs designed to help increase student retention

Develop communities across the campus in support of retention activities

Learn to present your ideas based on research and review a real-life case study, conducted by the instructor pre-and post-Covid.

The time commitment for this four-week asynchronous course is 15 hours total.

The instructor, Debra Lucas-Alfieri, Retired with Distinction from her positioin as the Head of Reference, Interlibrary Loan, Public Services, and Information Analysis and Instruction, at D'Youvile University in Buffalo, NY. Approved by the RUSA STARS Executive Committee on June 12, 2024.

Purpose

While resource sharing operations vary from institution to institution, specialized information and skill sets are transferable and compose the general foundation of the profession. This expertise covers categories such as knowledge of consortial and reciprocal borrowing relationships, copyright, domestic and international resource sharing codes and policies, broad research skills, and communication skills with both patrons and other libraries. The Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) Sharing and Transforming Access to Resources Section (STARS) has created a set of professional competencies to use as general guidance for resource sharing practitioners. For each of the areas, a resource sharing practitioner is encouraged to know and to be able to employ these principles and techniques; however, not all competencies may apply to every position and can vary by organization type and circumstance.
